Transmission Trouble

I have a '99 taco 5 speed and recently an issue has popped up with first gear. When I put it in gear and start moving it pops out of gear with a loud pop. This only happens in first gear and only when I'm starting to let the clutch out. Once the clutch is all the way the way out and I'm driving along its fine. This only happens in first gear and only when I start rolling. Is this a sign that the tranny is starting to go bad or could it be something else. I need to change the fluids and my buddy recommended RTX 90. Any one have any ideas or other suggestions? Thanks in advance.

 

Really, just a bushing? That would be sweet. Do I just need to tell toyota I need a shifter bushing or does it have a fancy name or part number. Thanks.

 

Hey Wildcard did you check your bushing? I have the exact same problem in my '99 tacoma and it isn't the bushing. I had the tacoma dealer replace it when they replaced my clutch. It only happens to me in first gear so I'm thinking my transmission might be totally hosed as well.

 

i think toyota calls is a nylon bushing. (goes on the end of the shift lever, into the trans correct?) sounds like the shift sleeve is not fully engauging. it may be a synchro-ring not letting sleeve sit.

 

I haven't had a chance to try it yet but here in the next week or two I'm doing a maintenance day for brakes, fluids, tires, etc and I'll be doing the bushing at the same time.

Just curious, is this bushing we're discussing the little green one on the shifter? Cause I melted that one about 4 years ago and just never bothered to replace it and my shifting issue is recent within the last 2 months or so.

I pulled it out to look at it thinking the dealer hadn't replaced it, but it looked brand new. I was hoping that would fix it, but it looks like I'll have to find out what a syncro-ring is and try to replace that. I'm thinking the problem does have something to do with the synchromesh because even with the clutch in when I'm trying to cram it back into gear it doesn't match revs like it should. All the other gears work flawlessly though... hmmmm.

 

that does sound like major trans "open-heart" surgery to r&r the synchro. when u drain trans oil, carefully look at the gear oil to see if any unusual metal shavings/deposits drain out with fluid. check magnet drain plug. its an indication that trans is grinding and eating itself up.

 

Thanks a lot guys, I know a lot more about my yoters tranny now... and about how big of a job it is to rebuild it. I wish I could find the 1st gear synchro ring somewhere for $$ reasons. I wouldn't mind rebuilding the entire transmission, but with rebuild kids including synchro rings starting at $700... uhg.
