Beach driving

I am about to put some new tires on, but before I do that I need to know what is the best tire for beach driving???? Any suggestions????? Thanks

I put the BFG All Terrain 265/75/16 on my off-road and there great. That's the biggest size you can put on without a lift. Just put the readylift in and now they look a little small. There good for about 70000m. Nice looking treads too. We do a lot of trails around NH and ME and there is a good amount of sand and they work great. Good luck let me know how you make out.

 

I have Nitto Terra Grappler and drive in sand dunes all the time, they handle great even without airing down. There is also the Nitto Dune Grappler which is supposed to be good for the sand.

I love my BFG A/T. Only been stuck in sand once, but I should have known better before driving through that with no momentum...

1) The new Tacomas with TRAC in H4 and A-TRAC in L4 with the stock Rugged Trails fully inflated will blow you away! Here is my new 2010 on its first Baja trip (south of San Felipe) on the beach (where previously I always had to deflate the tires to 10-15 psi)...

This is in H4... TRAC on...







Later, I turned the TRAC/VSC off and the truck dug in (with just one tire in front and one in the rear spinning). This would have been the same thing in my '05 and '01 Tacomas. I activated A-TRAC (and the Rear Locker for good measure), and the truck slowly pulled itself out of being stuck... never let any air out of the tires.

As for the non TRAC beach drivers:

Coarse sand (sea shell/coral/gravel blend) is harder to drive than fine sand which compacts easily.

If forward momentum becomes difficult or impossible DEFLATE tires to create a 'bulge' in the sidewalls... which helps the tire to 'float' rather than knife in the sand. 4WD hi range is less likely to dig you in and get you stuck than low range. The key is floatation, not power.

My '05 and '01 Tacomas did fine at 15 psi with 2 ply sidewall truck tires (Rugged Trails, Dakotas, Toyo Open Country AT, Cooper Discoverer AT), but needed to be down to 10 psi with 3 ply mud/ snow tires (Cooper Discoverer STT, BFG All Terrain T/As, etc.)

A tire with minimal tread teeth works superior to aggressive mud/ snow tires. A 2 ply sidewall is better than a 3 ply.

Avoid sudden turns, and slamming on your brakes to prevent digging in. If the beach is steep, try parking at the high end and point downward. Do anything to make it easy to get rolling and stay on top of the sand.

Even 2WD vehicles can drive in sand with enough air out of the tires... However, anything below 10 psi risks popping off the bead... so use caution, avoid sharp turns... and have a good electric air pump to re-fill once you are out of the sand.

Again the '09/'10 Tacomas with 4WD and TRAC probably don't need to do a thing! Oh, what a feeling!
