The reason I was thinking of that size is because there is a wide variety of mud tires in that size and the tall and skinny would perform well in mud and snow.

So has anyone ran the 235/85R16 tires on a stock 2nd gen tacoma? I'm curious if I'll be able to run this size on my reg cab when the stock tires wear out.

I know most owners prefer the wider 255-285 tires, but I'm looking for the answer to OP's question. Thanks

    Woot, Thanks for the info.

I was only able to find pictures of a 3" lift 1st gen.. but even with the skinny 235's I think I like the look.

Sorry for the late reply, but I have a set of 10 ply XPS tractions on my truck. They have no problems with rubbing. These tires are a lot better than the Generals I had on it before. I've had them running for about 1.5 years now and they still look new, in fact, i have not rotated them yet. The tires are expensive, but so far I have about 30K on them and no problems/flats/wear. I can post a pic of the truck if your interested?

    Interested!

Anyone else have pics of their 2nd gen with 235/85R16s? Especially any head-on front views. Sounds like this tire might be a good option for a large diameter tire to combine with a mild lift without sacrificing fuel economy.

Just got these put on yesterday. DuraTrac 235/85/16 with 5100s in the front @ 1.75 and as of these pictures, nothing in the rear. She is in the shop now getting the rear leaf TSB done which should level it out, but there is no rubbing at all in the front and it clears everything by a wide margin, so I can't see this size being a problem with the stock setup.

That looks amazing! I drive my old hilux with 235/85/r16 in snowy crappy weather and the skinny tire does amazing! I will definatley be putting a set of dura tracks on the new Tacoma. And you get less road noise, and better fuel economy. Win win win!

It is almost a win win win, but not quite. I have about 10,000 miles on them now and my avg gas mileage went from 22mpg with the stock tires to about 17mpg with the new setup. The road noise compared to a Duratrac in a 265 or 285 is probably much less, but it is still quite a bit more then stock, which I knew, but just be aware.

My theory on the gas mileage is the weight of the tire. That isn't the only thing, but it is the one thing I didn't think about ahead of time. I had the same win win win thought as you, but the duratrac only comes in that size in an E rated tire at 51lbs each. That is 11 lbs more then the slightly wider ones in a C rating. This could be because I run a 4 banger and getting these things moving is more taxing... Maybe the 6 cyl will handle them much better.

Good luck with the setup, in the end I am happy I did it and the good outweighs, but it wasn't as cut and dry as I thought it would be.

It will look exactly as skinny as a 255/85 since the aspect ratio is the same. Basically just a shrunk down a bit version of that 255/85 size.

You can find our arguments for the benifets of tall and skinny in the 255/85R16 thread.
