265 vs 285????

I would like to see some discussion as to why I should get 285 vs 265. I dont mind the gaps with a 2.5 lift in the front. I drive 95% highway and commute 340+ mi a week. Are they worth the extra costs?

if you are driving 340+ mi a week then you should go with 265 or smaller due to better gas mpg

I second that. I already have vibes from the lift. I dont want to have to deal with rubbing too. I have never seen a tacoma with 285s on it in my neck of the woods. I saw one from a far distance when I was traveling for work. Actually seeing it vs. a picture would help out a lot.

x2 but OP if I drove as much as you, I'd stick with 265s. I've got 265s and there alright looking with my stock rear/leveled front but eventually I'll raise both ends and get 285s.

I just put on some 265/75/16's on my truck w/ 5100's at 1.75 and rear TSB. The tires are much bigger than what pictures seem to show. I say they are perfect for my daily driver.....can't imagine putting on any larger. (PS Thanks Chris4x4 for all the great advice!!!!!)

Yes, my gas mileage will go down a little, which is kind of an issue, but I would be willing to trade for the usability.

Theres a big cost difference between 265 and 285.

Oh and by the way, the cost is VERY minimal. Went I got new tires, the difference between the BFG 265 / 285 was a few bucks - according to the quotes I got from the tire shop.

hell yes there is! and the MPG loss...I was gonna buy some 285s but my stock wheels weren't backspaced enough so I stayed with the 265/75/16s...kinda glad I did to cause I don't have the extra loot to spend on that extra gas with my Fiance being in school and only working part time

I had the same dilemma not so long ago. I love the look of the 285's but i decided to go with the 265's for now.

I drive around 300 miles each week and 90% of the total miles I put on the truck are city/highway (on road). From what i've heard about 285's is that even with a 3" lift you will get some minor rubbing at full turn. I believe you will still experience rubbing after trimming the inside the wheel well also. This to me doesn't sound like a smart choice for off roading. I don't want to go off road and worry about my tires tearing up my wheel well or fender flares when going over bumps at speed. Or not being able to turn the wheel as much as i'd like when the wheel is tucked up into the wheel well.

For me it was as simple as this:
Do I want the looks?
Or do I want the functionality and better gas mileage?


Being that I drive quite a bit and would prefer the better gas mileage and also full funcionality of my truck, I decided to go with 265/70/17 Nitto Terra Grapplers. FYI- I currently have the stock suspension other than the rear TSB. I will be lifting with 5100's and OME 885's pretty soon. I really just want to level the front of my truck with the back. The way it is now, I have not experienced ANY rubbing whatsoever.

^ After trimming, my 285's sound like they still want to rip the fenders off while offroading.

I was thinking hard about trading a guy so I can go back down to 265's but decided that I'd stick it out.
