Painting wheels black, opinions

I have a 2010 AC 4X4 in Sivler Streak with black trim and bumpers. It has the standard stock 16" steel gray wheels. I've made up my mind to paint them black but have a few of questions. Since the trim is flat black, would you paint the wheels flat black also or a semi-gloss for some contrast? Also not seeing what you do with the wheel weights. Do you paint over them and at next rotation touch up where they were? Or do you try and remove/reinstall them. I would think they would be difficult to put back on and still look ok not having correct tools. Another thought is to wait close to rotation time to do the work and have new weights put on. Finally do you paint the lugs also or leave chrome? Thanks for your opinions and help.

 

Flat Black! I would have those sticky weights put in the center of the wheel. that way you wont see them. also you can keep your chrome lugs or buy new black ones!

 

I did mine a satin finish and love it. As for the weights just paint over them and at the next rotation get the sticky ones. Then just give those spots a little touch up.

 

OK, if I request the sticky type would need to wait till rotation time. I did not know they gave the option to you. All that I have had the tire folks put on were the clip type.

yeah you will have to request them, but they will need to rebalance your tires at the same time.

The best thing I can think of is for you to prepare to paint both flat and satin. What I did was prime all the wheels and then painted one with the satin. Rolled them up to the truck and found that I like the satin better. The primer is pretty close to flat which will help you make your decision. If you dont like the satin hit it with another coat of primer then then the flat coats.

If it helps the light bar is a flat paint in that picture.

 

Thanks for all of the great help guys. Satin looks really good on your truck. It seems to tie your colors in nicely. With silver flat black may look better. It would certainly match the trim. Gloss would be too much. I am kind of leaning toward flat. Anyone else have Silver with black vs. painted trim and can post pics of your black painted wheels? Also when removing/installing the wheels, are the low tire pressure sensors an issue?

 

I did mine with engine enamel so it would harden real well and hopefully hold up a little better also heat from the brakes was a consideration granted we probably don't break that hard and even moreso on a constant basis

 

I don't know what you plan to do, but I just took a little piece of tape and put it over the valve stem.

 

Thanks, that's easy enough. Having never removed a wheel from one of the newer mfgd. cars with the new fangled tire pressure sensors, I'm not aware of the mechanics of how they work. Walmart at one time charged me an extra $5.00 to repair a flat tire because mine had these sensors. Not sure if they still do that. It sounded like something that could be damaged or extra care should be taken. I did have my dummy light go off (!) and could not figure out why. Finally found the spare tire to be low but did not remember seeing any device to determine this.

i have a sliver one too, i just did the them a flat black but now im not sure if satin would be better any who here are some pics of it with them on, also let me know if u want some pics of them with primer and off the truck

 

I fully intended to do flat, but backed out at Walmart. The Krylon satin looked more flat on the cap, but I have to admit I'm happy. Hope the finish holds up OK. My wife says it now looks more manly. The silver color was not bad and looked classy, but just did not look truck like. I found the center FJ caps from a nice member here on the forum. Only problem is it looks like they will be marked up when the lugs are removed for rotation by the lug wrench. I need to find a non marring wooden or plastic small flat tool and remove them ahead of time.
