tire comparison

OK folks, another new tire thread. I need help deciding on new tires for my 08 tacoma. I do about 70% road driving and 30% off-road, nothing serious mostly dirt, sand, and a little bit of mud. I am set on all terrains in the 265/70 to 285/70 range, and have been looking at Mickey Thompson ATZ or BF Goodrich A/T, however, there are a few more ATs out there that deserve some thought. I was wondering if you folks could help me out by offering some insight into what I feel are the important deciding factors - #1Treadlife, #2Noise, and #3Looks (of course). If you have any experience/knowledge with the following tires please sound off. Thank you in advance for your wisdom. Also if you have any other comments/suggestions feel free to spill. And by the way, I will be installing a lift first.

None of the above . Why no mud tire??? I say that cause Toyos suck (my dad has those), BFGs cake up too easy, Nittos look like crap (lightning bolts) , Pro Comp doesn't make the best tire.

Look at Goodyear Duratracs- Great combination of mud and a/t

 

I've also head good things of the General Grabber AT2's, as well as the Hankook Dynapro AT-RF10. Of the ones you listed, the ATZ's would be my choice.

 

Out of those I would say the only ones that suck are the MT's and the Pro Comps. The other 3 are good and you really can't go wrong, just make sure you get the highest load range possible so you can get more miles out of them. If it were up to me I would say the Toyos.

I have 40K miles on the Toyo a/t's and the have been great tires. I would say they will go 50K miles no problem. I have 285/70/17's. Toyo makes great tires

 

Toyo makes Nitto btw, so you can take the votes for Nitto and add them to Toyo, lol.

 

I voted for the BFG's..... Ordering mine this week, doing the lift next week sometime.... Dont go through enough mud to warrant mud tires, and from everything that Ive heard, the BFG's last forever!! Just my opinion though, there are a lot of factors involved in selecting tires.... Budget, need, driving style..... Youve come to the right place though to get good opinions, and usually get to see your dream tires on trucks like yours. Good luck with your decision!! Ive made mine already!!

 

It is hard to beat the BFG tires. I have had them on several trucks and have always been happy. They are a very good all around tire and not too noisy.

 

I have always had the BFG on larger trucks. They served me well. Now that I am concerned w/gas mileage, I got the Hankook Dynapro AT-RF10. They are a lighter tire, don't hum down the highway, look good, balance good, and are good w/ gas mileage. And they work well in mud/sand/snow.

 

Thats one of the things that I'm concerned with. I've heard a lot of people say that the Bf Goodrich is a heavy tire and will take down mileage. I think that BF Goodrich makes a tire in a lower load range in 265/70/17 so will that solve the problem of being a heavy tire? Also thanks for introducing the Hankook Dynapro AT-RF10 I didn't even know that tire existed. I'll definitely keep that in mind in my tire selection.

Just installed the Bridgestone Dueler revo 2's (stock size) and they appear to be really great for my needs. Check out the tire reviews on Tirerack.com. (there are also others) . Made my decision on hundreds of reviews. It took me a while but I'm quite happy with the result.

 

I had 2 sets of BFG AT's on a frontier and got about 40k out of them great tire I think. My jeep I had the General Grabber AT2's good tire just god awful noisy. 30-35k miles on them should have just put MT's on it, sound would have been the same. I drive about 85-90% highway and really didn't notice gas mileage drop. 45 miles one way to work in the Poconos sucks, tires are a must. Attributed that to going to larger tires. I may be trying those Hankook tires next they look like a good tire.

 

I had the TOYO ATs on my '05, they were great... Maybe 35K, But for me closer to 30K before changing to Cooper ATRs, also great.

Way too many sidewall failurers I have seen in Baja with the BFGs, and another tire thread here said the M/T Baja ATZ was VERY NOISY.

 

My Toyo's have been good to me. I put them on summer 07 and they still have a lot of life left. Good in rain, good in snow, good ride, good price.

 

My family had Toyo A/T's on all three of our trucks. The set on my Silverado 2500 lasted the shortest at about 30,000 miles but I blame the shorter life from towing 10,000 pound trailers fairly consistently. The sets on the other two trucks lasted almost 40,000 miles. Very impressed with the tires and now we all have the Toyo open country M/T's which in my opinion are the baddest mud tred available. Quiet ride and they perform everywhere you take em. Ha I love Toyo's. I used to work as Les Schwab and Toyo's were our best tire.
