re-tread tires? what are your thoughts?

I do think the price isn't low enough to warrent my interest.

 

I'm not sure what the retreading laws are on a pasanger car/truck but I'm pretty sure you cant have them on the front end. If you're using you truck as a ranch truck, I wouldnt see much of a problem. Personally, I wouldnt want any retreads on my truck that I'm taking family down the road in.

 

So I just called the place. They are like regular tires they say.. with regular highway use they get 45-50K miles.


and they can put a walnut and glass mixture into the tire which helps with snow ice and rain..

i kinda trust the place.. would be interested to see if anyone has tried this out

 

no thanks. Ive been hit by semi truck retreads flying off on the highway. not fun!

 

Make sure to check out retread laws in your state. I honestly wouldn't hesitate to buy retreads or run em. We run retreads on all of our dumptrucks with very little or no problems whatsoever. Laws in WA say you can't run retreaded tires on buses or other public transportation, also we aren't allowed to run the retreads on the front of our dumptrucks. The most common issue would be seperation of the tread and casing due to something fucky during the vulcanizing process, bubble or whatever it may be. IDK, the price seems pretty decent.

 

Also most retreads fail because of the harsh use, don't think that they just randomly blow apart like a time bomb...

 

Good point! I think the laws are state-specific so it's wise to check yours if considering them.

As a related consideration: would be curious to know how insurance views them??

I wouldn't use them. My safety, the safety of my family and my fellow drivers are not worth the savings. I remember years ago that retreads had speed limit on them. You couldn't driver over certain speeds with them. I'm sure the technology of producing them is better than it was 30 years ago but unless I was just driving around a ranch or something I wouldn't touch 'em.

When I was a kid starting to drive, my Dad told me one very important thing that stuck with me.

"Son, the one thing you don't want to go cheap on, are your tires. Think about how much faith your putting into these 4 pieces of rubber and all that depends on them."

Not word for word, but you get the gist! And since then, I've always put a good set of tires on my vehicles and especially my bikes!

 

if you want to die and take out other people while driving on them, i say go for it

for me, i'd never use them, not even on a trailer.
think safety first

 

Well just buy them, mount on an extra set of rims and change out the tires and rims when hitting the trails or the ranch. Save the good tires for everyday highway use. I might consider buying a set if i can get a cheap set of wheels off another taco.

 

What are ya friggin nuts????????????? Beside that even if you were to run them legally it could only be on the rear. Besides that you ever see what a cap does to a rear 1/4 fender on a semi at 65 mph.

 

This is true. Mostly those retread fail due to underinflation and overheating. We ran retreads on our trucks for years and never had one fail, well except for that one because i whacked a curb at 30mph, but that damn curb jumped out in front of me!
