wheel size quetion

I ordered a set of XD spys and some Duratracs in a 265/70/17. The shop ordered the 17x9 instead of the 17x8. Will there be any problem running this size tire on the 17x9 rim? Thanks in advance for any replies.

Goodyear only "approves" that tire in that size for rim width up to 8.5"

That said, there's a big difference in offset between the XD Spy in 17x8 and 17x9. The 17x8 has a 5.2" backspacing and +18 offset - which, I think, put's it pretty close to the backspacing of the stock wheel. That may be what you want - and you MAY have less rubbing issues. However, it's iffy -- too much backspacing and you'll be rubbing on the upper control arm.

Folks that go to the 32" tire size and also go with less backspacing (higher negative offset) often find they have more tire rubbing if they're running without a lift: e.g. babytruck.

 

Do you think the 17x9 would do fine with the 5100's set at 1.75?

 

Most likely OK, assuming you've removed front mudflaps.

And the tire width/wheel width thing is up to you. I personally would not run a too wide rim just 'cause the tire shop eff'd up.

My gut is that if you air down for offroading, more likely to break a bead running the wider rim. No personal experience of that, though.

 

With your setup you will be fine. i run 13" wide tires on a 12" wide wheel and its fine.. the 17x9's will look better IMO

 

Thanks all for the replies. I think I'm going to go with the 17x9. I talked with a fellow Tacoma owner at 4wheelparts and he said the back spacing on the 17x8 would be too much. I really don't want to buy spacers. I found this interesting tidbit on tirerack.com

"Additionally, some vehicle manufacturers and tire companies have permitted rim widths that are not within the tire's original approved rim width range. For example: BMW has combined 235/40R17 sized tires on 17x7.5" rims (which are 0.5" less than the narrowest 8.0" wide rim listed for the size) on certain M3 models; and Chevrolet has combined P255/50R16 sized tires on optional 16x9.5" rims (which are 0.5" wider than the 9.0" wide rim now listed for the size) on certain Corvette models. While these applications have received the approval of the vehicle and tire manufacturers, staying within the approved rim width range helps assure that the tire's internal stresses are within its design parameters."

I won't be doing an extreme off-roading, just hitting the hunting spots and fishing holes.
