Tires for MPG

Ok, after searching through what seems like 100 post of "MPG and Tires" that are mostly about M/T tires or 285 tires, I decided to post.

I am running the stock 265/65r17 Dunlops now. I am getting close to tire time or how ever you look at it.

I want to go up to 265/70r17 and have a little bit more aggressive looking tire WITHOUT sacrificing my MPGs, I know cake and eat it to. It is a daily driver and no need for the bigger wheels other than I want the looks and don't care so much for the highway dunlops on the sport.

Any recommendations for a mild A/T tire or a more aggressive Highway style tire that is light or close to the stock tire weight?

We are moving to Hawaii shortly so no need for off-road performance, but still want it to look like the tires belong on a truck and not the grandfathers town car.

Actually, on the highway, the taller tires gave me better MPGs and I didn't notice any loss of power in town. I'm running P-rated Cooper Discoverer AT3 and really like them. They're quiet and have a nice pattern.

Hankook and Toyo have decent A/T tires also. If you want to get good MPGs, I'd stick with the lighter P-rated tires if you can find them.

 

I just put aftermarkets on mine. Came from the 17" sport wheels. Got a good deal on some 16" wheels so went with them. I researched and wanted pretty much the same things. More aggressive, yet keeping the mpg's and a quiet and soft ride. I wound up with Yokohama Geolander ATS. I can't say about the 17's but my 265 70 16's were only 1 lb heavier than the stock Dunlops. I did a lot of my research on tire weight's from Tirerack.com and I'm not sure how accurate they are but also used the shipping weight from Amazon on some tires. I am pretty happy so far. Only had them about a month. The wheels were 2 lbs heavier than stock. So far mpg's seem to be about the same. I'll know better when the summer gas comes back around though. I love the Geolanders so far, ride is just as smooth as the stock Dunlops and barely, just barely any more noise from them. Hope this helps and good luck!

 

I was looking at the cooper's with the 265/70r17 weighing in at 41lbs it isn't a bad option in weight. It looks good and performs well.

So the Cooper A/T3 helped the MPGs?

 

Well, I went from Cooper ATR's in 265/65R17 to the AT3's in 265/70R17 so the tread patterns were about the same, just a taller tire. The taller tires helped on the highway because the truck is geared fairly low. On my double cab 4x4, I still push 20 MPG with that set-up.

If you're open to it, skinnier tires help. Something like 255/75R17 or 255/75R17 would be a good option also althought you might have trouble finding options in that size.

Yeah I seriously considered the AT3's also. Wound up getting the Yoko's a bit cheaper in part, due to a price match at DTD from a whole dollar less at Amazon.

 

I am really swaying towards these cooper's. Not widespread and can't find them local (small town in Oklahoma right now) I do want to buy them before I head to hawaii because local prices are higher and/or shipping prices are higher.

I wish I could see more pics or better yet a set in person, but that isn't going to happen. But 55,000 mile warranty on them and they tested better than the toyo and bfg ATs on two seperate magazine tests makes them a steal for some of the online prices.

Now I need to find the best price and are there any 265/70r17 available with black side walls? All i have found are white side wall tires and I was told they are white on both sides (is that true never seen that be the case)

makes so much more sense, when i was told that it didn't make any sense to me. It wasn't answered online probably because it would have been a stupid question.

I think I am going to order them from treaddepot.com $40 instant rebate and the cheapest shipping for me on the net. $604 to me and then i balance them here. Can't find them local, but they will ship to me in 2 days ground.

Have you checked Amazon? I found my Yoko's on there way cheaper than anybody then clicked on DTD's "found it cheaper" link and wound up on the phone with them and got them a dollar each cheaper and it was free shipping. Of course when I bought mine, they weren't close to the same price on the Coopers though. However a local Cooper dealer did give me a similar quote out the door. I was shocked. I wound up about $50 cheaper on the Geolanders overall, but that was including the road hazard protection from DT.

 

America's Tire sells a 4-ply version of the Hankook DynaPro ATM's. They are really light, and a good-looking tire. As long as you don't haul or tow a lot of really heavy stuff, they would be fine.

They wouldn't hurt our mileage at all. Not to mention, they are extremely affordable

 

That's interesting. The weight of the Dynapro's is what steered me away from them.

 

I've had the Michelin LTX A/T2 for a year now and loved them. Avg MPG actually seems higher than my stocks. I went with 265/70/17s and they've fit beautifully.

 

yeah so far the best price on the coopers has been $136 a tire in 265/70R17. Shipping is $60 for a set of 4 is pretty good for me, no sales tax another good savings for me. So it works out to $151 shipped per tire to my door. Amazon is $179 and most of the other online stores are about that or more, one other was in the same price but $100 to ship 4 tires. So far so good, I will place my order this afternoon if I don't have any hesitation or find a better price.

Sounds like you have a great deal there!

 

$151/tire isn't bad at all as long as you get a decent deal on the mounting and balancing.

I've found that they seem to be more sensitive to pressure than some other tires I've had. If you get them and they seem to 'wander', don't get discouraged, mess with the pressure and it goes away. At 31 PSI they had a lot of wander to them, at 36 PSI they ride perfectly (that's for my truck, yours might be a little lower since I carry a lot of weight with me all the time).

 

PUGGA, were you still having issues at highway speed? That is the only issue I read about on the forums and you had mentioned they started to wander at hwy speeds.

 

Nope, I started messing with the pressures and the problems went away. I should go back and update that thread. My pressure dropped when it got cold and that's when I started having wandering issues (I didn't put 2 and 2 together til yesterday). The tires looked fine, the TMPS didn't trip either but the pressure dropped a few lbs. I pumped them back up and they're just like the day I bought them!

 

ordered them. I will update when I get them, but for the price they are good enough for the reviews they are great, and with the reviews and the price "NO BRAINER" for me.
