new rims/tires - need tpms?

Hey guys,
Got a 2011 dblcab prerunner with stock steelies 15x7. If I buy new rims and tires, do I have to get the TPMS pulled out from the stock tires, then put in? I wouldn't want to buy new ones, but I am just understanding how they work. They go inside the tire and is attached to the valve stem right? To pull them out of the stockies seem like a lot of extra work.

 

15s on a 2nd gen? Pics.. And you don't need tpms if you check your psi at least weekly, it's the annoying light that comes on the dash that bugs everyone.

Yes, the place where you are getting the new wheels and tires will install the OEM TPMS sensor for you on the new wheels. They will charge you extra for it though.

 

They will try to charge you extra for it, but ask if they can make you a deal. More often than not, they'll do it for you for very little.

 

One thing to keep in mind - if you are upgrading wheels you will more likely than not be changing to aluminum alloy wheels. The TPMS sensors from stock steel wheels will not mount properly into an alloy wheel. If you do want to keep your TPMS system functional you will need to purchase new sensors from Toyota that are designed to work with alloy wheels, EZ Sensor aftermarket sensors, or something similar.

You can use the straps, yes. Just make sure anytime you go in to have your tires changed or a flat fixed you alert the installer. It's possible they can break the sensors if they don't know they are strapped to the barrel.
