Paint 2013 Tacoma stock rims

So I finally took the time to paint my rims.

The process I followed was:
1.) dismount
2.) wash
3.) sand
4.) wash
5.) mask with cards
6.) prime
7.) paint
8.) remount
9.) repeat

I used 100 grit all purpose sandpaper (about 3 to 4 sheets), 2 cans of rustoleum clean metal primer, and 2 cans of black rustoleum engine enamel.

Hmm, ever think of leaving them white? I would be curious to see what they would look like..

I did too... Truthfully I considered that after the first tire

Googled it an it looks pretty nice. Which is why when I buy rims and tires I will get black rims with a white beadlock outline or some white and lack combo

 

Why the cards? Do they work better than newspaper?

 

Once you get the pattern down they're easier to fit under the lip of the tire in my opinion, and where I live there's always a constant breeze so any paper like that was hard to manipulate

I used the same exact process on my LC wheels.

The raised white letters look so good on a dark centered wheel. It is old school thinking in my mind. My uncle told me to only have white letters against dark centered wheels when I was 6yrs old.

 

1000x better to work with. in fact OP took an unnecessary step forward (probably helped in the long run tho) and taped them down. usually you can just slip the cards into the lip between wheel n tire and you're ready to paint.

 

I would plasti dip them but I wanted a more permanent painting.

About the white letters, that's why I'm doing the white beadlock, gonna be different but pretty, like a white wall

And the tape took longer but in the long run was Moore efficient

 

Only thing I can say you should have done differently was remove the wheel weights. Once you need tires, they're going to pull the wheel weight and you'll need to sand and paint again. To do that, mark from the center of the wheel weight straight onto the tire (put a piece of tape on the tire and indicate the weight so you know which one goes where). Remove the weight, do all the prep and paint steps you listed, then reinstall weights or have the wheels re-balanced using the stick on weights on the inside of the wheel.

 

What happens when you go to get your tires balanced and they remove the wheel weights? No black paint there

 

Well i know the DM of the local discount tire, and theyre going to mount the tire weights on the inner part of the wheel, the mount side, not the outside you see. also i get my new rims at the end of july so when i get these rims off, im actually going to get the whole wheel sandblasted and fully redo the rims, that way who ever buys them has a "custom" rim concept, and when theyre mounted and balanced wont have an issue

Ill also post a picture of the truck with the new rims, the stock rims when they're done (for sale), and then the new rims with the white beadlocks

 

I tried to do the card trick but the Hankooks have a rim guard kind of lip around the rim and I couldn't get them to stay worth a damn, and tape didn't stick to the tire either. I think I'll give it another shot though, I like the black semi-gloss look better than the flat black I had when I derped them.

 

When you put them in, try an angel, where part of the card is under the lip, and part is out, then the next card fill in the gap... its a pattern.
they essentially 100% don't fit directly under the lip, its the pattern then covers the whole tire. so like i said, partially, then use the next card to fill the gap. if that makes sense?
