The looseness in my case was the sliding fit of the steering column itself. Although mine will not "slide" anymore with a little tack weld, my looseness is COMPLETELY gone, I am so happy not to have 1" play in the steering wheel. One may argue that in a crash the steering wheel will not collapse as designed now...but as an engineer I think a lot of things have to fail first. The crash would have to be very unique, and hit on a upward 45 angle formt eh center of the vehicle, then two 20mm bolts in the steering knuckle have to shear, I'm confident my little tack weld will break first.
