Ducktales (1987) marked the Walt Disney Studio's entry into the afternoon syndicated-cartoon market. The series was loosely based on the imaginative adventure stories Carl Barks created for the Disney comic books, featuring Donald Duck, his nephews Huey, Dewey, and Louie, and Uncle Scrooge McDuck, a miser who possessed "five cubic acres of money." This three-disc set begins with episode #6, "Send in the Clones." (The series started with "Ducktales: Treasure of the Golden Suns," a two-hour TV movie in which Donald joins the Navy and sends Huey, Dewey, and Louie to live with their great-uncle Scrooge. This adventure was recut into the first five episodes, which are not included in this set.)

Ducktales never matched the panache of Barks's inspired original. The TV series added the whiny Webbigail and her grandmother, Mrs. Beakly, who resembled a feather pillow with a beak. Launchpad McQuack supplied mock-heroic comedy, although his prominent cleft chin made him look like a pelican. When Uncle Scrooge and his relatives scaled the Himalayas in search of the crown of Genghis Kahn in the comic book, Barks ended the story with typical irony: people weren't interested in the gold and jewels Scrooge coveted, they only wanted to hear about Gu, the abominable snowman he encountered. In the animated version, the big joke is an amorous, ugly female snowman chasing Launchpad. But these shortcomings never bothered the Gen-Y viewers who grew up watching Ducktales. (Rated TV-Y, suitable for ages 6 and older: cartoon violence) --Charles Solomon

Nostalgia at its best!

Nostalgia at its best!
Nostalgia of the late 80s & early 90s. At 30 years old, there’s just some cartoons we never grow out of. Duck tales is one of many. I’ve seen tne rebooted duck tales and I’m sorry to say I am less than pleased with it. The new version is too “white coloring” and hewy, lewy, and dewy all have different voices. For this reason I decided to go OG and buy the originals on dvd. The dvd is great and brings back so many childhood memories. However a small complaint and I’m not sure if it’s my tv or the dvds the sound quality on all 3 seasons (9cds total, 3 cds in each season) all of them the sound is super low volume I have to turn my tv well up into the 50s and 60s range and I hear other dvds and programs comfortably at a sound volume of 8 to 12, just to give you an idea of how high I have to turn it up. Secondly, I’m counting 75 episodes total listed on all 9 dvds but in total only show 70 episodes. Where’s the other 5? Not sure. Was it an error during manufacture or did I get a defective copy? Also the episodes are not in order as released. So that’s a bummer. Other than these 3 things I can’t say enough good things about owning these. I still think they’re worth the money for the price. They’re pretty cheap right now and for some reason you’d think buying all 3 seasons in a set would be cheaper but it was buying them individually, I saved lots of money. I paid about $25 for all 3 releases vs $43 amazon wants for the set. Maybe those ones include something I’m unaware about, or maybe they’re newer. I’m not sure. I can say this, if you want to be transported back to your childhood I recommend getting duck tales on dvd. My 8 year old son, enjoys watching duck tales on dvd and it’s mommy and daddy recommended vs the junk they play on today’s tv. We now live in a virtual world of iPhones iPads computers and even tv shows make no sense and have no simple life lessons and teach nothing good or positive, what’s your child going to learn with today’s tv? Whatever happened to cartoons with a lesson or a meaning to it and simple cartoons without all the fancy effects and graphics. Call me old school, I will raise my kids on ducktales, Tom & jerry, rugrats, Doug, little bear, out of the box, and Gullah Gullah island, tiny toons etc...I recommend ducktales to anyone of all ages. This show never gets old. One day I do hope they re-release as a complete series. t first I thought I in fact did own the complete series but that’s not the case. Still, but this you won’t be disappointed.

The kids loved it
Reviewed in the United States on June 6, 2016
This is such a wonderful set of Duck Tales episodes! Sure, it's not in chronological order. I don't remember that being an issue when I was watching as a kid. They don't need to be seen in order...they are completely 100% stand alone episodes! Not sure why they were released this way, but I have no complaints.

Lately I've been trying to get my kids interested in cartoons that I watched when I was a kid. Duck Tales, Dark Wing Duck, Rescue Rangers, Tail Spin, etc. Youtube is a good introduction, but the ability to buy these on DVD is fantastic. My kids (ages 3 and 5) are entertained even though these are drastically different from cartoons that are made today. They seem to really enjoy Duck Tales, so we bought this DVD for a recent road trip. This bought us several hours of viewing time in the car. The 3 year old is still a little young to pay attention to an entire movie (even an 80 minute Disney movie). He gets bored in the middle. Twenty two minute episodes of these will hold his attention...and they even get some giggles!

As a parent, it's a bonus that I get to rewatch some of the cartoons I grew up with. There are so many jokes that I didn't appreciate as a kid (like the space episode when the actor/astronaut speaks like William Shatner the entire time? Hilarious!)

Also, I've seen that Disney is going to start making and releasing new episodes of Duck Tales in 2017. What better introduction than watching a few of the classics? I these DVDs, they're packed with tons of episodes, and they've been wonderful for road trips. Highly recommend for nostalgic reasons!

The DVD is great picture quality, and superb entertainment for the kids. The Video/DVD quality is high grade. The stories are all formatted for Saturday morning style Broadcast.Much of this First season I have not seen before, thanks to the Australian "Mouseketeers" show, or SATURDAY DISNEY, tendency to broadcast out of synch. However, since the DVD avoids commercials, and the inane inserts that the "hosts" made, I get to watch the shows whole. And forget about the comment that there are DVD commercials you cannot get past; just select root menu, or title menu, and you can select the show you want.
Stylistically, this material is Classic Carl Barks, and you can see this in the Gladstone series comics ( either the ones from 15 or more years ago, which were in themselves reprints, or the higher quality ones out currently). I don't know why the stories were re-written in the manner that they were, but they seemed to follow a very patterned structure. And for some unknown reason, Donald is hardly seen at all ... this affects the Adult viewers since Donald has been , at least historically, the most popular of the Ducks. I assume that a story "model" was created, where in some stories that had a mystical bent, SWEET DUCK OF YOUTH, the mysticism is taken out ( and the use of the Caverns is gone too). However MASTER OF THE DJINNI, PEARL OF WISDOM , and HOME SWEET HOMER, all have a specific "Magic" or "Magical" leaning. However, the majority of the stories that are true Bark's flights of fancy, are all closer to the Sci-Fi Model of the short form story.

Anyways, this is an A-Grade Video watch ... if you cannot get a good video signal, then its time for a new TV or a New DVD player. The only thing that needs upgrading is the DVD's audio. Its a pity that Disney clearly aimed this at the kids market, and have not bothered to edit the audio to 5.1 surround, which they clearly have the technology to do; Otherwise, Any fan of the one and ( unfortunately) only DUCKTALES, needs to buy this set. And, for the Adult fans, as well as the kids, look at the Gladstone reprints !!! Available now, from Amazon, they are VERY much worth the price.
ENJOY
