It be nice if Moroso provide SOME documentation. I guess I should have known, but anyway, looks like it's a good idea to lube the O-ring with oil every time you take the Can apart, and the metal rim that screws against it. Looks like a lack of lube led to that O-ring stretching on mine.
I managed to coax it all together, but for next time I think I should have replacement O-ring. Which leads me to beef #2: Moroso, it would be nice if you published a part number for the O-ring, and made it readily available. This is not a $30 can. I'm in communication with JEGS now, hopefully we will get it sorted.
Very solidly built, heavy, precision machined item. I've just installed it, have high expectations it will do what it's supposed to do. Will try to update, down the road.
One question: can either hose bib be used for intake or output? Everything inside appears to be completely symmetrical, I think it doesn't matter.
Related, and kind of a quibble: there is no instructions. It is fairly straightforward, but a piece of paper saying use either hose bib, doesn't matter, would be nice.
Another observation: both the pipe spigots and the drain bit are VERY tight fit, getting tighter and tighter with each turn. Maybe this is by design, the threaded portion is slightly tapered? I did use plumbers teflon tape, and got at least 4 turns.
Beefs:
1. The supplied screws for attaching the collar to mounting bracket seem WAY to tight, too hard to screw in, pretty much impossible to use. There appears to be a daub of some sort of lock tight as well, to compound matters. Even (attempting to) wire brush the tenacious lock tight coating off, and oiling the screws, I had no luck with these, and feared I would strip the threaded hole. At least the tapped holes in the bracket are standard American, and a trip to the hardware store with the bracket, you'll find compatible bolts.
2. There are no hose clamps, minor, and hey I was going to the hardware store for #1.
3. The supplied hose is good quality, but only about 3 foot long. This was more than enough for my install, down low, access from below, but I can see a lot of people would run short, especially if they install at top of engine bay.
Addendum, Jan 25th, 2018:
Regarding the lack of hose clamps, while I've installed hose clamps at all joints, I suspect they're overkill; the hose barbs are very tight/solid connection.
Also, drained it out after 2380 kms, mid-winter, yielded about 50 cc of cafe latte coloured liguid, a mix of water/oil/fuel I'd guess. Working good.
Addendum: January 17, 2020:
When disassembling the can for inspection/cleaning, found the O-riing between the two body halves stretched. Contact Moroso, who recommended to alway lube the O-ring with anti-seize, and gave me some O-ring specs:
-------------------------------------
Moroso 84574 Air-Oil Separator O-Ring:
Oil-Resistant Buna-N
Dash Number: 038
(Relube with anti-seize periodically)
2.614" I.D., .070" thick in Buna-N
(66.40 mm I.D., 1.78 mm thick)
-------------------------------------
I was able to find this O-ring locally, bought 20 (mininum they would sell) for about 40 cents apiece. :)
Also, added a small l-shaped baffle to the can. Legs of the angle roughly 1/4" and 3/4", with two holes in the short leg, matching the mounting screws locations on the perforated disc. Install with those screws, and made it just wide enough, so that if the level rises there will alway be room on either side of the baffle for the air to pass.
Will see in a few months if that improves the collection rate.
Also: revised the fittings on the can from 3/8" hose barb to 1/2", and replace all the hose accordingly with 1/2". Thinking to make it a little freer flowing, and slow down the flow.
November 19, 2023:
Did try the aforementioned 1/2” replumb, but it proved problematic.
OMG the price has gone up. When I purchased it was around $190 CDN IIRC, and I thought that was extravagant.
I’m now using two of them in series; bought one for another vehicle, install proved difficult, ended up using it myself. This catches surprisingly much extra, albeit mostly water.
Have removed all hose clamps at barbed connections, no problems.
