But, overall, this guy saved my life with my camping trip!
Originally I had a thermarest and while that one was technically more compact, easier to blow up and take down, and lighter weight than the static V, it only was 3/4ths size where as this one easily covered my whole 5'3" body from head to toe comfortably. It takes some effort to blow up, but you won't be blue in the face when you're done either. Also, the thermarest is great for hammock camping, but this guy turned out to be wayyy more versatile. Overnight layover in the airport? Just pump this guy up and voila, a comfortable place to sleep right on the floor while you wait for your flight to not suck anymore. It made last minute camping on the ground not awful, and I got decent sleep if you can believe that in an airport of all places. In a tent? The thermarest left my hips and shoulder (as a side sleeper) feeling sore and awful the next morning.. Slept totally fine on this guy though the following night (brought both and tested them out each night). Also, the thermarest left my feet fairly cold since they were on the ground directly, this is a full length.
If you're a glamper and want the rolls royce of pads, I would go with the Exped 10 mat.. it is comfortable as a dream (it was better than my ikea mattress at home!), good enough to use in a longer term camping situation (like crashing at a place for a couple weeks, guests staying overnight, etc.) and folds up muuuch lighter and smaller than those old school bulky air mattresses that you can find a dollar a dozen and always have holes in them.... But! That thing is not portable for backpacking. For the price, this guy will fold up super small, and will go anywhere. Stuffs easily into luggage or backpacks for a quick overnight stay. I definitely found more uses for this than just hammock camping. No real cons to this, I would definitely buy this again.
Thermarest does make a small, compact device for blowing up larger air mattresses without all the lung effort, so if you're the type that gets lightheaded easily spend the $25 bucks getting one of those for this.. but I'm a small person and I didn't have much issue blowing it up, taking a break, and coming back to do the rest a minute later. Seriously, for $50, this guy does it all. It does not seem as durable as a thermarest, and that's a slight downside, but hammocks are not rough on pads at all so I'm not worried about that, and it did not get ruined when I was cramming my backpack FULL to the brim and cinching it down super tightly with stuff.
The replacement that I received worked as expected and my other one lasted as well. We went on a 9 day backpacking trip and used them every night. Both of them stayed inflated throughout the night and were as comfortable as ever. I do wish they were longer since I am 6'2" but I still fit on it well enough. The Mrs. has approved also. She commented that it was the most comfortable ground pad she has ever used and slept great; considering we were in a tent on the ground for 9 days. We are both side sleepers, stomach sleepers, back sleepers and anything in between. The Static V stood up to all of it. My hips never once touched the ground sleeping on my side. My only concern is the longevity of the ground pad. I'm hoping for the best.
ORIGINAL REVIEW
I bought two of these for a backpacking trip next month. One for me and one for the wife. Had to send one of them back, as it would not keep air even without laying on it. Received a new one and it has been fine so far.
Camped out for a night with them and it was comfortable. I didn't touch the ground even when on my side. I'm 6'2" and its long enough for me. The length is definitely a bonus. Packs down to a very small size and is very lightweight. Blows up very easily. Will be great for backpacking for about half of the year since its only a 1.3 R value. We'll see how long they last.
Top reviews from other countries
Pros
-Ultra light.
-Packs up super small. Smaller then my 1L canteen, The best part, it's actually very easy to repack. It's not like your god awful tent that never, ever packs up as small as when you got it.
-Easy to inflate. It takes perhaps 20 average breaths to get this sucker rock hard.
-Its not a memory foam queen size bed, but it is very comfortable. You will be well off the hard ground (about 2") and you will stay that way all night. I found little to no deflation on my many nights spent on this pad.
-Comes with a generous patch kit, that stays nicely in a separate compartment within the main stuff sack.
Cons
There is only one, and it's not really a con.
This is a summer camping pad. Good enough for early spring, summer, and late fall. I'm not 100% certain, but I believe this mat has an R value somewhere between 0.2 to 0.5 (R value = Insulation value) Since I only camp within these seasons, it is perfect for myself. If you were planning on doing some winter camping, perhaps you should look for a sleeping pad with a higher insulation value.
All in all, I wouldn't hesitate to purchase again.
TWO YEAR UPDATE:
Well folks I've been using my pad for two years now on all my camping and canoing adventures, and it finally sprung a leak.
Just a small pin hole in the bottom middle of the pad. I'm not surprised, as I have used this pad a lot over the years and I haven't been kind to it. Many times I have even placed this pad directly on rock by the river so I could sleep under the stars. In fact, I am impressed and surprised that it has taken this long to spring a leak.
Patching was very easy.
1.) Sink the pad in water to locate the leak
2.) Let it dry and then apply a very small square of the material provided (spreading the provided glue evenly on the patch)
3.) Hold patch firmly in place for 5 min
4.) There are no other steps. Boom, your done.
Painless, and as good as new. I'm still loving this pad, and I still think you would be a fool not to buy it!
