Stupid question, but I am pressed for time, and am leaving for the Overland Expo early tomorrow morning. I have a TRDOR, and switched to 285/70/17 tires after my lift. I have yet to get the spare mounted, and think I may want it for a 3000 mile round trip. Will a 285/70/17 still fit on the under bed tire carrier, or will it need to be carried in the bed exposed to thievery? I guess I should also ask if anyone would think it thievery to carry a matching sized spare, as I suppose I could limp to the nearest tire store on the spare to get the flat replaced in the unlikely event it is needed.

I live on an island so planning becomes more necessary then in other places thanks in advance.

Do you have D-rings in your bed? If so get a bicycle cable lock and run it through there and lock the spare in the bed.

I think it does... there's some threads about it on here somewhere. The readers digest version:

You need a hammer and not one of those girly hammers either and have at the brackets that hold the tire.. until it fits.

if you have time, the best way is to remove one of the tires on your truck and put it on the spare mount- the only way to be sure and you can see for yourself if any additional mods need to be done. in addition to the fit you will see how much clearance you will have-

is that a after market wheel? I was wondering about that too. I may pick up a other trd sema wheel and mount a 17 on my spare.

I would check the clearance between the spare tire and the rear differential if you decide to mount it under there. Both @Crom and myself had issues with the differential contacting the tire on our 2nd gens. I believe we both have write ups on how to relocate the spare tire hanger in our build threads (2nd gen specific if they are different).

Want to mount mind under the truck as well. I've got a 285/70/17 BFG KO2. pretty much the same dimensions as yours right? Did yours fit okay or did you have to mod a little?
