According to the owners manual, 4x4's require 10 miles a month in 4 wheel drive to lube the system. How are you 4 wheelers doing it. Is it safe to do it On Road without causing leaks as described in the owners manual. Theres no way to add 10 miles of Off Road where I live because of all the restrictions and private land owners who gate up everything. Tks TW

10 miles a month seems excessive. i wouldnt recommend 4wd unless you are driving in a very straight line. 4wd, pavement and turns dont work

Yeah, I don't plan on doing it on pavement unless it's absolutly safe. I do run it on a dirt and sand trail but 1/4 mile is what i'm getting.

People think I am a bro because I hop curbs at Starbucks

But I tell them I need to keep my 4WD lubed per manual

I do about 100 miles of real off-road a month in my mall crawler, so no issues here :)

You can drive on the highway with 4x4 indefinitely and won't hurt anything. Only sharp turns will cause it to bind, small-moderate turns are fine. If you're concerned about keeping the 4x4 system lubed just throw it in 4x4 on the highway for a while and pop it back out after 10 minutes or as you're exiting

Tks, sure wish Toyota would have added that to the owners manual as a side note.

And? You can do 150mph in 4x4, doesnt matter. You have to.be under 55 to engage it, but feel free to drive licence revoking speeds all day every day with it on cause it won't hurt it. It can also be dis-engaged at any speed.

lol at these threads always popping up. Just do what the owner's manual says. 10 miles/month if you can, if you can't it's no big deal but don't make a habit of going months on end without ever using it.

I don't understand why people always argue over the whole "don't use 4x4 on pavement" thing. It says not to in the manual so don't do it, especially if you have a vehicle still under warranty. I live in a concrete jungle but there are plenty of fire roads less a half hour away in almost any direction. Dirt roads are the best place to use 4hi and 4lo and you don't have to worry about binding.

Or just turn the sprinklers on in your front yard, put it in 4lo and tear that shit up. Once a month

I'm not saying you should so 150mph in 4x4, just that you can. A poster above thought you couldn't use it above 55mph, but that's just the max speed to engage it. OP wants to keep his system lubed, so I suggested turning it on on the highway.

4x4 doesn't care what type of.road you are using it on, so long as it gets used and you aren't making sharp turns. On the highway you are making very large diameter turns so you won't have to worry about binding. It's an easy way to get 10 miles of 4x4 a month. If you have relatively straight state/local higways/ secondary roads by all means knock yourself out and use 4x4 there to keep the system lubed.

Point taken, but the warning about not using it on pavement is related to potential damage that could occur and not luggage flying out. If I had absolutely no other option I'd find a big parking lot or a road that isn't frequently traveled that I knew I could maintain a straight line on. Doing it on the freeway isn't something I'd risk living in LA especially.
