Hi guys. I have a 2016 tacoma trd sport. i just got it about 2 weeks ago.. The first week I had it, in the middle of my 2 hour trip, the music just stopped and i looked at the screen and the media system shut off.. then it started by it self. i ignored that at first. but today in the middle of my 2 hours drive, it did the exact same thing, TWICE. i just play my spotify music and dont touch anything while im driving. do you guys know whats causing this?.. i know that i should bring it back to the dealer but my schedule has been really busy and this is such an inconvenience especially that this is supposed to be a brand new car that should have no issues.

    Update 1:
As expected, the dealer doesn't have any software update available for me. The tech opened up a 2015 tacoma entune fix for "Rebooting while on heavy load (navi, music and phone)" software update. They want me to come back next week so that they can try putting in that software. It is kinda ridiculous because we don't have the exact same hardware for the 2015 model. I think its gonna mess it up even more. I wish they would just open a task or ticket with toyota so that they can have an update specifically for my 2016.

    Update 2: 01/15/16
After 3 months of talking to my dealer and corporate customer service. I finally had my Head unit replaced. BUT... the same thing is happening. I have videos of it shutting of 2x in my 2 hour drive. I will post it when i find the time. I know now that this is happening to a lot of people and even in other Toyota models.. but... It's just not something I'm willing to just let go.. It's a brand new truck and it is annoying...

Has anybody had better luck than me? I just don't have the time to keep bringing my truck to the dealer so that they can experiment on it and just tell me that they can't replicate the issue, so there is no issue.

    Welcome to the site

Its a brand new design, there are gonna be some teething issues. Probably will just need to wait for a software update at some point in the future. Call the dealer so it can be noted, it may already be a known issue.

My 2014 will do the same thing from time to time. Mostly after startup. There are a few posts of people having similar issues. First I have heard of it happening to a 3rd Gen though. Some tried replacing the radio, only to have same issues with aftermarket radios.

As a tech, Please record what the radio is doing when it is acting up. Infotainment concerns are some of the hardest to duplicate.

Probably the app itself then causing the radio to crash

Doubtful, toyota has not had the best track record with stereo software. The 2009's had issues of turning themselves off and that was before Entune. My wife's 2012 with Entune used to reset itself a lot, it was finally cured with a software update a year or so after we bought it.

Interesting. I work for a different manufacturer so simply basing my diagnosis off of what I'm used too. Sounds like the OP will have to wait for software update.

I work at a Toyota store and these infotainment units aren't all perfect... seen it on 4 runners and siennas too... usually they lock up not restart...

My favorite moment in a 5th gen 4Runner was figuring out the radio completely locks you out if you try to pair a bluetooth device while driving. Although it was a base model stereo, not a touchscreen. My 2013 non-entune/JBL touchscreen would just never give you the option if in drive.

That is just great Toyota. The same problem with my 06 sport. i could be driving without the stereo on and all of a sudden it turns it self on. I had the dealership replace the whole unit and it still does it. Has to be something with the electrical system Here we are in 2016 and the same thing is happening

A bit more going on behind the scenes of the 16's radio vs your '06, it's all new stuff and there are issues to be expected.

Most likely some grounding issue with the hardware. Hard restart like the truck has just been turned on sounds a lot like a hard wire ground issue to me. I'm new to Toyota so has there been any known issues with electrical gremlins caused by bad ground points?? I do a lot of vintage stereo repair and also build from scratch, grounding is THE most important part to get right. Mess that up or have intermittent grounding and its very difficult to find the issue, and even harder to replicate. To the OP - does the problem happen when you hit a bump in the road... something has to be a trigger, try and pay attention to what environmental conditions are present when the machine re-boots.

seriously so many if these entune units do this... not even kidding. this head unit is supposedly the same as the sienna already had... it's not bumps in the road or anything like that... I'm not even in service and I hear about these head units daily...

Yep that sounds about right with my 06. If I hit a bump in the road it can cause the radio to come on. However this does not happen every time I hit a bump

just throw that out there, since that was happening on the 14/15 4runners for a while.

usually it involved the nav being used. never happened to me since my garmin is way better than the oem nav.
