Just wondering if you were going to use an oil filter other than toyo brand which would it be in order of preference?

Wallyworld sells Fram ( about 3 different ones), Mopar, and Puralator for the Tacoma

Wallyworld is also closer to me. Its about 15 miles where as nearest toyo dealer is about 35-40 miles and parts stores usually close by time I am heading that side to go out. I mean I could pick up a few at a time as I'm that side during day sometime but just saying. If it aint going to hurt to run a fram or mopar I probably would.

Also, do you guys run 10w 30 or 40

fram is ok, people make way too much of the cardboard thing when its not in your engine long enough for the cardboard to break down.

if that scares you then use Purolator, it is a very good quality filter, as is wix.

in ordr I would say Purolator, wix, fram. I only list fram last because purolater and wix are usually cheaper.

    sounds good.

I mean depending on how much cheaper they are than the Toyo Brand's 6 dollars and something from the dealer also

Fram is crap.. Stay away I have seen them split at the seams and destroy engines.
If you don't use OEM then use Wix. I only use OEM on my customers engines and generators. Unless it is an old engine no longer supported by the Factory. Then I use Wix.

Look up Wix online then find a dealer. Most quality Auto parts stores will sell them.

If you can't find Wix, use Napa Gold filters. They are made by Wix and Napa stores are usually easy to find.

Half way through a 20 minute run around thunderhill, I noticed a serious drop in oil pressure, it usually runs around 60 psi hot. I pulled in and checked the oil and there was plenty, just the pressure was low.
When I got home I verified the pressure with a mechanical gauge, still low.
Next, I pulled the pressure relief set up to see if it might be partially stuck - nope, that was fine.
Next, I replaced the fram with a Baldwin and BINGO the oil pressure was back to normal.

So, I pulled the filter and cut it open. It was collapsed.

The 308 is not noted for high oil pressure and I wasn't running high revs cold, the pressure relief system moved freely, not sticky.

I think the Baldwin sells for 12-15 bucks but it works and is a high quality filter.

I run baldwins and synthetics in everything I care about.

Check with a local dealer to see what they recommend for your local climate, then adjust for how hard you push the engine.

    hope this helps,
    chris

    thanks for the reply

I always ran fram in the stang ( non race car just nice street and drive about one day a week), until maybe 6-7 yrs ago when read a lot of negative things from some folks. I have been running motorcraft ever since and plus wally world sells them. I don't kill any of my vehicles really but the stang gets blown out every once in a while definitely :)

People overplay the OE filter on many forums.

It's not made by the OE marquee, just like 'their' oil isn't either. It's made by the low bidder who will meet their specs. Question is, what's special about their filtration specs. I'd wager nothing different from any other mass produced vehicle.

Purolator Pure One has been my choice for a long time on lots of cars. Some with 7k RPM motors that saw the rev limiter weekly.

Wix and/or Napa Gold would be my second choices.

Boutique filters like K&N, Mobil 1 etc. are just better at emptying your wallet. Although occasionally you'll find them for 'free' or greatly discounted, as part of an oil promotional package. So one of those occasionally finds it's way under my hood.

Nice thing I've discovered is that my '04 V6 Highlander uses the same filter as my '13 L4 Taco. Very handy for supplies.

I did run Fram on a lot of cars for a lot of years (along with Castrol GTX dino), but I never kept any of them past 250k miles, so I can't confirm their impact on motor longevity. ;) However, I did choose to quit using them when it appeared that there had been a shift in their QC of the product, and they started taking a beating in some forums over actual structural issues like the one mentioned above.

I use Purolator from Wally world. From my research they are a great filter w\anti drain back and bypass.

In this case, you'd be better off doing your homework than wagering.

    BINGO.

Go with Dahl. They quickly delivered exactly what they advertised and, as you point out, their price was right.

While maybe not a MUST, changing the gasket is a good idea to prevent leaks. Since Dahl includes them, it's cheap and easy to do so.

    Agreed.

I'm sure you have documentation showing that Toyotas filter specs are something more stringent that what Purolator or Wix builds.

Want to share that with us?

sounds to me like he was saying that the Toyota oil filters are not or may not be better than the regular ones did I miss something lol.......
