The protesters on Burnaby mountain did move to the assembly area designated legal by the court except for a few who were arrested , not sure that has any bearing on the story though

It's not illegal to take pictures on public property last time I checked and C-51 has specific wording that would make it possible for CSIS and the RCMP to legally monitor and eavesdrop on lawful , peaceful protests over projects deemed to be " in the interest of Canada's economy " ie pipelines

Lots of people urging the feds to ammend the bill , including lawyers and former PM's

no, but lurking around industrial sites while snapping pictures is rather suspicious and will get the attention of security guards. the RCMP called him about it, big fuckin deal.

He wasn't " lurking around an industrial site " , it's a conservation area and trail network

"A few days before, Takaro says he had been taking snapping shots along the Burnaby Mountain conservation trails when a guard at the nearby work site approached him and told him he couldn't take any photos."

He didn't give contact info , the RCMP told him " they already knew he was part of the ( legal ) protest group "

    Here's the point ~

Does this bill really need to include measures to restrict or allow for eavesdropping and covert surveillance on groups legally protesting against projects that whatever Federal government is in charge at the moment deems to be " in the interest of Canada " ?

I don't think that has anything to do with keeping us safe from Al-Queda or ISIS or " Jihadist Islamists " to quote Harper .

There are already laws governing domestic rights of free speech and free lawful assembly

ok, he wasn't on the site he was just taking pictures of it? or was it just a coincidence that he was near the work site while taking pictures?

I know a lot of guys that work at industrial sites and taking pictures of industrial sites is grounds for termination because of security issues.

The RCMP and Kinder Morgan employees and who knows who else filmed all the protest activity

and the tie in to C-51 was the scientist being troubled that this was occuring BEFORE C-51's increased abilities for the RCMP and CSIS , that's it

Their test drilling sites are right in the middle of the conservation park , I'm sure that the KM security dudes are on edge due to the high profile of the protests etc , but he was not on an industrial site and was on public property , it's not illegal to take pictures , you're missing the point .

The difference is guys working on industrial sites are actually on industrial sites

This isn't too Dick Tracy , if I had to guess I would say they ID'ed the scientist and googled him and got his daughter's phone number off her Facebook or something like that , at least that's what I would do

found this on craigslist - half price for the Rugged Ridge liners!

    http://vancouver.craigslist.ca/nvn/ptd/4887490073.html

Probably not the 3-D or "weatherwhatever", but for the price of $50 CAD... Installed them on my truck today. Yeah, I am cheap...

Oh, the only place they have them is the Surrey store, the one close to 192nd and HW 10.

    Cheers.

My guess would be the amount 'power' you give CSIS/RCMP/Neighborhood Watch/SQ/Boy Scouts/CBSA/Police is insignificant compared to the amount of funding you give them. "Follow the money, Murdock"

I've never totally understood the conspiracy theories that follow every single piece of legislation that has any sort of control of anything defined in it. Most people will never use there rights (American) or privileges (Canadian) to free speech other than to bitch about things they likely know very little about. The odds the the government really wants to control anything else other than your votes is very very small. That being said I haven't followed C-51 very closely, but I'm sure if there is enough feedback changes will be made since it is likely going to be an election year.
