One of our friends said, "females have agendas." I scoffed... com'on. She was right. This girl of mine is something! We can be 100 yds or more from someone playing ball with their dog on the beach. Smudge still thinks she's the boss of the world. Goofy dog child.

At our house we refer to this sort of behavior as... fear of mom going through a portal. Such as... I've got to close the bathroom door now for my shower. Stop freaking out. It's not a portal.

Sausage boy is a charmer, easy to see that! :)

Smart man. We neutered our German Shepard pup right at four months. I didn't want aggression issues with my elderly, dying cattle dog. By 10 months, Max was 30 inches at the shoulder. Dogus Giganticus. I said, shoot we should have named him Clifford!

I actually rescued Chance (his real name) from being sent to a shelter at 1 year, 2 months of his life. He has been with us for 5 months at this point. Making him 1 year, 7 months. When I picked him up he was really really bad with bathroom manners and behavior. He was always a loving boy but he needed some serious work. Right at about 1 yr./5 mo. I broke him and things finally clicked with him in his mind. He is a great dog now and is finally allowed on the bed, definitely a great listener and he knows when its time to calm down and when its time to play. He's a real character! :)

I've always believed in the gentle nature of Bull Terriers. A lady in an obedience class years ago referred to her boy as a Spit Bull. When he was happy slobber went everywhere.

it took us a year to potty train Perry he'd been so terrorized as a two month old. I feel your challenges.

Any quirky routines with Chance? If Perry gets scolded, first thing he does is whip his head back and down to check his plumbing. It's so ridiculous there's no way to stay mad at him.

Dunno where he picked it up.... or I'll ask him, do you need to go out to go potty? First thing he does... tuck head, check peepee. Our sweet, demented runty boy.

You know, he's actually a very clean clean boy. To give you an idea of how clean he is, he doesn't slobber at all like ever. Since he is fixed he doesn't lift his leg to pee and mark his territory, he squats down like a girl. He doesn't lick his junk at all, and most of the time he does his best to stay nice and clean.

Unfortunately he suffers from some pretty rough allergies. Every morning that I come home from shift or that I wake up on my days off to let him out he starts coughing and clearing his throat because he has like a post nasal drip. He gets a pretty heavy runny nose every so often. It's usually indicative of when he is going to have a bad day allergy wise.

As far as quirks go he's a total fruit dog. He loves pineapple, apple, strawberries and banana's. He'll come into the kitchen and wait for me to chop up some fruit for him and will just look at my patiently until I do so. When I ask him if he has to go potty he'll go wagging his tail and run to the door, sometimes he gets so impatient to go outside that I'll go and open the door and the screen is still closed, so he'll run right into it. I laugh at him when I happens (I am an evil parent) Hahahaha.

During the house breaking period though, until he started understanding the way of the household, I trained him old school military style. You mess up and you receive a consequence (whether it is a heavy scolding or a spanking and time out). If he is having accidents because he is sick and doesn't feel well, obviously its not an issue of self control, so I understand and let him lay down as I clean the mess up. He loves me to death but if he messes up to this day and he sees that I get upset he never forgets how I was, though because he is older now and understands I am much easier going on him.

Holy chit, I've done a lot already!!
We just got our results back from our "lab pointer mix". Yeah, not quite. Her two predominant breeds are Bull Mastiff, and Staffordshire Terrier. A lot of "mixed breed" in the tree too, so a little disappointed in spending $65 to find out she's a mix, kinda figured that out already. But it does give a piece of mind. Now looking at her, you can see the Staffy. Although a little disappointed in the lack of identification, I could have wasted that $ on something much worse than a great companion.

Mixed breeds are actually better then purebreeds (eg incest dogs) because they are much less prone from suffering from the inherent long term problems that their otherwise purebred counterparts suffer from.

Great looking FB! I have a friend on the North Shore that I hunt with who runs 3 of them. One of them, Victor is so fast that he "trees" ruff grouse LOL. But they all have a set of wheels on them with no quit even at the end of the day.

    Nice  :)

I ccould see that happening if you mix two breeds together who are already in poor health. It carries into their kids. :(

Somebody finally turned 1 today. We went on a very long all day hike/fishing trip yesterday and then spent most of the morning and afternoon out and about today. I have a ton more pics of him but I'll just leave this one here

Happy Birthday Ash! Love that hat looks like someone had a great day :)

Pup turned 16 weeks a few days ago. A week ago it was teens below zero with a couple of feet of snow pack. Warmed up this week a lot 68 today, snow is gone and 5 months of dog poo is exposed. Spent most of the day with the shovel in the yard and likely the rest of the week. The Toller pup needed a job of course so I gave him one from time to time.

He is pretty intense about it.

Going to be awhile before he is steady to wing and shot but delivery to hand and drop is pretty solid right now as it should be. Next couple of months is e-fence training time now that I can get the training\marking flags in the ground. Pretty sure he won't miss the check cord.

Ahhh the joys of parenthood. :) Glad you two have found a process that works for you. Have you ever heard of Clicker Training. I grew up with old school training methods watching my folks train German Shepherds. Clicker Training was an eye opener for me... and incredibly amazing for me to get a view into the world of a dog's mind in positive operant conditioning. Tons of fun to watch the dog offer the behaviors to me to see if he could guess what I wanted from him. My old Aussie, Bruce, would go through all three tricks that he knew... in rapid cycle... to see if any of them was what I wanted. Amazing to watch his mind work. All so I'd click the clicker and give him his treat.

Sorry to hear about the allergies. Smudge seems to have quite a few sensitivities. So far, though, getting her onto a grain-free diet has really improved her life. Little to no scratching... no more hot spots... and much calmer and less cranky. I feed with "Taste Of The Wild." It's expensive.... about $45 something for the 37 lb bag. But it's worth it for the dogs' health and my peace of mind. I used to feed a specialty prepared raw diet, but that was just way too much for my budget. The Taste Of The Wild kibble really seems to be the best balance for my kids.

Added bonus... the normally coarse hair of the cattle dog... is now soft as a bunny, or at least a cat.

Happy to say My fiancé and I picked up a puppy on Saturday that we've had or eye on for weeks! His name is Benji (short for Benjamin). He's a 14 week old Terrier mix. Adopted him from Lost dog and Cat Rescue Foundation, in northern VA. he came from Puerto Rico, where the foundation has a cooperation with local shelters.

based on the last two days of having him, he seems to be the most trainable dog I've ever interacted with. he is already giving us signals of when he needs to go outside for business, and we've already gotten him up to speed on fetch. not just going to get the ball, but bringing it back and holding the ball in front of you until you say "drop it".

He hasn't quite figured out stairs yet, doesn't understand that he can't run right through glass doors, and scares himself in the mirror, but he's learning quick. especially with the glass door thing

couldn't have asked for a better pup. And like any new parents, we are going nut s with the pictures, so sorry about the photo dump.
