Need help with Satoshi thin-lip how-to

Searched around the forum and cannot seem to find a good write-up on a thin lip Satoshi-style grill. Would be much appreciated if someone could link me up!

While on the subject of the Satoshi, is there any advantage as to whether the grill is separated or not during the build?

 

do the regular satoshi, the trim it down to the width you want, that how i would do it, i stayed with the regular satoshi, if ur not color matching dont bother taking it apart, just tape it up so u dont scratch it.

 

Keep the two parts attached. Cut the inner surround 1/2" back from the front lip all the way around.
Take your time
Cut slowly
Do not run a dremmel faster than 15,000RPM
Mask out the outer surround with blue painters tape so you don't scratch it up.

Thanks! In the thin-lip threads I did happen across, none really called out that the inner needed to be cut back. I kinda thought that, but figured "what do I know." I was really wondering how the mesh was bent so exactly slip inside the surround. Probably just missed that crucial detail.

How much depth is left if the inner were cut right at the area on the sides where the center portion is cut out?

I found that one of the best ways to mark out how wide you want the thin-lip is to get some painters masking tape (I actually used the 3/4" stuff) and it was the perfect depth. Put the one side of the tape at the edge of the inner surround and then cut at the other side of the tape. That seemed to work very well for me. .. just thought I'd share ..

 

I did mine today. I did not separate the halves. I used my Dremel with an attachment part then set the depth for the cutting wheel. I used the edge where the outer meets the inner as my guide and just ran the cutter around the whole opening. Cut some tabs on the inside and the center fell right out. This is a lot easier than the deep Satoshi but securing the mesh is harder on the thin-lip. You need to be a bit creative with the drilling for holes for zip-ties.

Wished I had taken some photos of where I drilled and secured it for you to look at.

 

A little pointer for securing the mesh, you can buy little ziptie base things and epoxy them to the back of the grill and secure your zipties to those.

Though, when sticking with the deep Satoshi, is the stock inner surround an even depth all the way around? Hard to gauge in pictures, but it looks like it varies a little. If so, would the thin lip require the same type of varied depth?

I've had my 2013 about a month now and the grill was one of the items high on my list of mods. Though, with the redesigned grill requiring some heavier fabrication (adding material to the sides) I may need to wait for a few more how-to's to come along. I could give it a shot, but my effort may well end up as a "how not to."

 

Where did you buy these little anchors for your zip ties? Doing mine this weekend an trying to get everything I need beforehand.

The red dots are where I drilled and ran zip ties. Except for the bottom, the others were an entry/exit set to run a zip-tie through and secure it to the mesh. The two outer ones at the top have mating holes on the outside edge as well as exit holes... My thin-lip was just over 1/2". Hope this helps for those wishing to drill and secure their mesh.

 

How are those epoxied mounts holding up after 4 months? Still good?

 

Yep still good, just make sure you either clamp them or tape them, if you have no pressure on them while the epoxy sets up then they won't hold very well, also scuff up the bottom of the ziptie base and the inside of the grill where you are appying it and then make sure its really clean. I used plastic epoxy or plastic weld, they are holding up really well.

Amazon, just search for ziptie base or ziptie mounts, there is a few different styles but any should work. Another method people use is epoxying threaded rod to the inside of the grill then securing the mesh with washers and nuts. Zipties are good enough for me, hell half my truck is held together with zipties

 

Sorry for digging up an old post, but I am wanting to do the grill and have a question. Do you still have to bondo and paint for the thin lip, also is there a step by step guide? I've look e d and can't seem to find one.

Depends how thin lip you go. If you can keep it in front of the areas that need to be cut out, then no. If you cut behind, then you'll need to fill those areas in. See picture below for reference.
