Replace '14 door "tweeters" with 3" fullrange?

I think the ********* adapeters I already have can be repurposed - the RS75's just barely fit inside the width. Took me a moment to realize you put your adapter plate on the outside of the factory bracket.

Scored me a great condition older Crossfire 5 channel the other day - back when they still made class A/B amps, but it also has a class D sub channel for my 2 Ω woofer setup. While I wait for my dealer to un snafu his issue with JL, This guy can stand in.

The main reason i don't like the new main stream amps as they all moved to class D topology on all channels. The old school style of Class A/B is the only way to go imo and I'm happy some one ells recognizes that

 

ugh, now i feel bad that i want to sell off my RF 360.6 6-channel behemoth amp and get a nice compact D amp. i just don't have room for this Golden BBQ pit!!

 

I have a lot of old-school DSM-style Fosgate and Precision Power amps laying around, but in that same boat - space limitations.

 

If you know where to look one can still find Moderm 4 channel A/B class amps that aren't boats . I do have 2 Massive shok 4xl 4 channels though, which I'm making fit.

 

really digging these pics. what do you have in back of the magnet on the door skin? I am thinking of doing this, versus my original idea of using the sail panels, since I am feeling lazy, but also might want to use some ribbon tweeters on the sails, later on...

 

It's in one of the earlier posts in this thread. I think he said he used some carpet backing material.

Great thread! Considering some small tweets in the sails and a small mid in this spot. Glad to see it's feasible. Makes me think the new Stereo Integrity TM65 Mids, plus some small 2-3" mid such as the fountek's or this Dayton, plus possibly making the Vifa OX tweets I have on the shelf useful finally. Maybe fabricate a waveguide for them even, still crossed high enough for the small tweets to hang with the mids.

 

I got this 2.75" driver from Jacob of Sundown Audio to review. I am replacing my OEM tweeter with this driver. It is slightly smaller than the bracket that houses the OEM tweeter as shown here(with a fountek fr 89ex):







I ended up ziptying it to the bracket, as I my drill was out of commision(batteries dead from non usage). decently solid, but maybe a temporary mount, who knows... I cut the connections at the terminals of the OEM tweeter, stripped the wire ends, and connected the wire to the speaker leads of the Sundown.



Plenty of clearance on the backside of it while mounted on the bracket.

The speaker is inline with the OEM midrange/midbass of the vehicle. I have a Pioneer 80prs powering the speakers, no amp, yet.

The speaker sensitivity is a bit more than the OEM tweeter, so it does over power the midbass a bit, with the stock wiring. Aside from that, it is bright, and can handle higher volumes than the stock tweeter(I can't wait to put some real power behind these). Imaging is pretty damn good(with the T/A set on the pioneer), as well as stage height. I can't compare to other drivers, as I have not tested other drivers, in this location, but I will say that it will be staying put for a good while. For the price that these go for, it is a quick win for Tacoma owners(2005+) looking to upgrade their OEM location tweeters. I think the location is a good location for a driver that can fit there, since it is stealth, and doesn't require any modification.

nice work! we need more people going against the grain!! i just couldn't stand everyone singing to my ankles. the mids now are at least dash level for me.

I was in that thread on diyma also wondering how it'd fit in a taco door. I'll be wondering next how it would fare for mid duty under a world-class tweet (scanspeak d3004) from the other diyma group buy (I ordered a set), and what kind of crossover points etc.

I guess this certainly confirms that little Sundown rascal fits nicely and almost perfectly to the stock bolt holes. A small baffle plate maybe or just mod the bracket so it bolts right up and done.

Why are your 8" dreams shattered ? Not enough depth for them ?
Just build out your mounting template and trim the backside of the panel to achieve enough clearance.

Hitting actual door grill, or possibly a flange around the grill?
If hitting the flange, might be able to take a dremel to that rascal.

 

You either have to thick of a mounting template or its hitting the flange like babs said. I highly doubt its hitting the actual grill.

I have some Super nice 8s that have nice xmax and don't hit and are rather deep

 

i went with the AD Designs 500 8"

it is millimeters away from the glass when mounted and i did trim the door panel as far as i could

cone was still hitting panel.

and using 2 per door.

if they aren't enough i will build a box for 1 8 and see how that goes
