Look on TW for a post by Chris4x4 - he got a bunch of filters and cut them open and inspected them.

The factory filters were visibly and measurably superior once you looked at the guts.

To the OP - if I just needed to change my oil TODAY, I'd use what's available. But then I'd order or buy a stash of factory ones to be ready for future oil changes.

Oil changes come up every 5000 miles; it's not like they sneak up on you unexpectedly. ;)

Speaking of which - I need to get off the flippin' computer and go change MY oil now...

    No.

However, I keep a couple on hand. If it's damp around the plug before I start, it gets a new one.

My Higlander is on the original at 100k.

I've had a few others over 200k with no weeping.

But it's cheap insurance and certainly doesn't hurt anything.

It's much more important not to cross thread the plug, and not to over tighten it.

    lol

was Wix or puralator in those that the guy tested/checked?

a lot of guys here love them and said they work fine for them so just asking. But if they are around the same price I can get the toyo's for ( bulk) but price for each ofcourse even if just a few dollars difference then I will more than likely go with the bulk of the Toyo's

I would say 50/50 it often comes apart on you when you remove the drain plug, if it doesn't then its fine to reuse until it does fall apart.

I just got tired of buying the crappy little gaskets for it so I just took the lid off of the oil filter cardboard box and drill the bolt hole, then slip it on your drain plug and cut around bolt flange to make your own "reusable" gasket and that's all you need.

it just needs something that compresses a "little" to seal and since there is no pressure forcing the oil out, you could even make a gasket from a sheet of paper and have it work.

I'm not interested in a protracted discussion of something that's been explored at length previously, by one of TW's most senior and knowledgeable members. Like I said, do your homework...
As I said above, probably not a must, but changing the gasket is a good idea to prevent leaks. Since Dahl includes them, it's cheap and easy to do so.

cool guys thanks to All that chimed in and replied. I'm loving my 04, had it now almost 2 months. Just put on a new air filter housing today and new headlight bulbs. Air filter housing was cracked and they put epoxy around where the maf sensor, the round portion of the housing meets the square portion. I contacted the dealer I bought from to see if they would reimburse me. I did get it for a good deal on Amazon though.

Now for a few questions just asking you guys for reference, I do have the manual but haven't read up on it yet. Do you guys rotate tires about ever 6k miles and how do you rotate? Front to back, criss cross, or what?

also how often do you flush the tranny and put new fluid in? Do yourselves and anything special needing to be bought to do so?

changing the belts easy or a PITA?

just asking all of these questions beforehand. My mustang is a 95 and not bad to work on and the s 10 is a 92. Any modular motor or anything newer than I guess 95 might be a little harder to work on for some things. Just asking for reference. I looked at the Alternator today and doesn't look too bad to get to to change.......

You must be talking about the "PuroHaters" as they're referred to on bobishtheoilguy site. Plenty of other threads where the Classics and PureOnes have been cut open to show perfectly intact media and by-pass valves after 1000's of miles of use.

All I'm telling the OP is this - I personally have looked into this issue for a long time. I've interacted with enough people including those at the corporate level (design engineers, etc.) to get a good feeling that Purolator knows there's a design flaw that surfaces from time to time with this filter. They know there's a flaw, but for some reason, are unwilling to change the design. Which begs the question - are you willing to risk installing a filter whose media may tear, and a little piece of that media gets lodged in an oil gallery (or some other critical area), block the oil flow and you ruin your motor? That's a risk *I'm* not willing to take.

Toyota claims the TRD filters are 98% efficient, although they will offer no proof (and I've contacted Toyota corporate) if these results are from ISO 4548-12 testing.

IF someone wants a reliable filter that's 99% efficient then you have three choices - Purolator Synthetic Oil Filter, Bosch Distance Plus or the Fram Ultra. All three of these have synthetic media and are outstanding filters that have oil flow rates that far exceed what the motor is capable of producing.

so you are saying pretty much you would use one of those synthetics you mentioned or the Toyo one?

I use Mobil 1 filters on mine. Yes, they are expensive but when I compare the cost of a new engine they are cheap. I forget which company actually makes them but they are made by the same company that makes a couple of other brands of very high quality filters. I also use synthetic mobil 1 EO 5-30 and go 7500 miles between oil changes instead of the 15,000 the filter and oil are actually capable of. At least that's what they say. I don't have the intestinal fortitude to go 15,000 miles on an oil and filter change eventhough many an oil analysis has proven that Mobil 1 EP will go that long.

Why don't you just order some online?

BTW, if not Toyota, my preference is not anything from Wallyworld. Pure One is one of my favorites, as is Wix, for price/performance, but Toyota falls into that to, and again, you can buy the Toyota's online from parts places and/or eBay.

Correct. *I* think it depends on your "comfort zone" and by that I mean that *I* think there are some instances when you really should use OEM products on your vehicle in general. I do. By using OEM you're assured that your vehicle performs the way it was designed and engineered to.

If you like the idea of using a genuine Toyota product, use a TRD filter. You certainly can use the OEM Denso, I'm simply guessing the TRD filters better, but I cannot confirm that. I"ve contacted Toyota corporate and they cannot provide me with any data.

For conversation, I'm going to "assume" the TRD filters have been tested using ISO 4548-12 criteria which states, "This multi-pass lube filter test identifies the contaminant removal efficiency of a specific particle size (in microns) and the contaminant holding capacity. This test also provides a beta ratio." Since the TRD filters are 98% efficient at filtering particles of 20 micron size or larger, does it matter to you to have that extra 1% of filtration efficiency??? If it does, use one of the other three specific filters which are all excellent. Both the Fram and the Bosch are available at WalMart.

As you research filters, keep an open mind. You will find scads of people who bash Fram and Purolator. After months of research, I've found most of these same whiners citing old data, amateurish test methods and otherwise ridiculous conclusions. For example, some people bash Fram but they're (in 99.9% of cases) talking about the low-end Fram "O.C.O.D." (Orange Can of death). They often cite asinine results that they heard from a guy at the bus stop whose Sister has a high school buddy who said his third-cousin's Uncle said he used a Fram filter when electricity was invented, and they're crap.

As I mentioned above, the PureOne is, in MY opinion, a VERY risky filter to use because the consensus is that it does have a design flaw, that being a metal crimping of the paper element which can cause tears in some applications. Do you want to risk it will work just fine on your truck???

In my research, the three I mentioned are the best considering performance, reliability, price, and availability.

I personally just put on a purolator pureone filter on my 25k mile oil change.
