Been having a strange noise lately. Brought the truck into my friend's shop and they diagnosed it as a bearing on its way out.

The bearing is in the cooling fan hub/fan bracket assembly

    Part 16307-62011

Toyota wants $600 for it. Camelback Toyota wants $410 + shipping.

My friend can get Aisin aftermarket for $300.

It's a two hour book job.

My question is: Has anyone replaced this and/or have experience with it? Is it something I, a quasi-noob-nimrod, can do in my driveway?

I'd rather not have the doctor pull $500 out my arsehole.

buy a used one in the for sale section or at the salvage yard.

    or ....

just switch to an electric fan, it saves gas and gives a small power boost as well, it just doesn't cool as well so if you live in 100 degree temps and get stuck in traffic all the time it might run hotter then you would like with it.

look for the electric fan mod

It gets really hot here. Plus if I'm wheeling in the summer the last thing I want is a fan that doesn't cool as well.

I remember reading that mod/thread and thinking it's not for me. I'm a "mostly OEM" kind of guy.

yep, same reason I didn't like the idea myself.

with all the guys selling complete parts trucks on here im sure you can find a good used one, at those prices its worth it to gamble on used but why the hell cant you take it out and replace the bearing? seams almost everything on these trucks "can be" rebuilt even if its not cost effective to and in this case it has to be cost effective even if you have to send it somewhere to get the bearing replaced.

you got a picture of the part and bearing you are talking about?

I asked my friend that and he says it's a poor design on Toyota's part. You have to buy the whole hub assembly.

This is my best friend of 21 years. I know he's not trying to swindle me.

Apparently it's #2 in this diagram

That first link is money. I want to buy Aisin and steer clear of cheap ebay stuff made in China.

    Thank you.

It's a proprietary cartridge type bearing, 1 roller and a single row ball. The shaft serves as the inner race for both.

    Awesome help. Thank you.

When you say "simple nuts and bolts job" it's literally just removing some nuts and bolts to remove the old one and slap the new one in?

Anything need to worry about in terms of lining it up right so the bearing(s) don't get FUBAR'd over time/use?

Drain coolant to below level of upper rad hose, remove hose.
    Remove fan shroud then fan.
Remove black plastic upper t-belt cover 5 or 6 bolts, be sure to unplug cam position sensor wire (lower pass side of cover).
The FSB is secured with 2 stud/nuts and one bolt.
It's self aligning and I have never heard of a replacement (Aisin) failing.
I suspect the factory parts were a little light on grease even though mine seemed fairly wet. They tend to squeal at cold start and show no slop or roughness, just noise.

    Forgot a few steps.

Obviously the accessory belts have to come off.

Unclip the 4 plug wire holders from the black plastic timing belt cover, leave the wires in the holders. Less chance of trauma to the wires that way.
The PS pump belt tension bracket mounts to the pass side FSB stud. The PS belt adjustment stud/screw has to be removed to slide the FSB off the studs.
It's harder to explain than do. You will see what's going on there with a quick look see.

One would really be slacking to spend 2 hours on this.
    Have fun

Easy job. Look up the section in the FSM about changing the timing belt as this fan assembly comes off during that job. Once you start taking covers off you can see how its secured on there. If youbaee due for the timing belt you may as well just do that as well since you be almost halfway there.
