Diff Leaking What do I do???

    Ok so the other day i noticed what looked like oil around the seal to my diff. how do i fix this? Or should i just take to someone and have something done? One guy on TW Live when i sent the picture said just tighten up the bolts but i just wanted to check.

    Picture it is kinda dark but you can see the fluid.

    Check to make sure all the bolts are tight. Personally, it doesnt look bad.

    Thanks Chris Ok ill Try to do that when i get home and then clean it up so i know if it leaks any more. I just hope it isnt anything worse. What could have caused to ot leak in the 1st place?

    Personally, it looks like a little seepage. Not a thing to worry about. Oil can get by the gasket if the bolts are loose/old, but if its not dripping on the ground, I wouldnt worry about it. :)

    X2. Heat can degrade a gasket over time.

    I would clean it up with some brake cleaner, tighten up the bolts, and monitor it.

    Ok ill tighten it and stop worrying about it. Its not dripping it just has some oil on it.

    Dont torque them too much....I think they only torqe to 50 ft-lbs. Stick a wrench on them, and give a little tug. :)

    The Prerunner is my only 4x2. I have always had 4x4's. Infact, at one time, I had 4 4x4's and 1 6x6. Being as my friends kinda nicked me "Chirs4x4" years ago (as there were 2 "Chris' in our group), the name stuck, and became my screen name.

    I want to run by you that I had a leak on the front seal on my 95 tacoma. The front seal was leaking oil. It ended up being the air vent at the top of the differencial was completely clogged. I went to drain the oil out after I got off the highway and took the bottom plug out. The oil exploded out the bottom so fast I got a face full of oil and oil shot all over the place.

    I suggest taking an open end wrench and remove the air vent. Looks like a small metal tube sticking out the top. I cleaned mine with carb cleaner and compressed air.
    problem fixed.
