I think in the state of California you can serve time. Greg would know the definite answer.

Yeah, relic is probably a good description. I hear the Lalalalala, but not applicable since this is all from a "what if" because I don't know if we want the old relic. Do really old guns even have serial numbers? (Old 38 special from prohibition days)

Besides that, I'm more inclined to want a newer gun myself. What's a decent handgun cost? Just for home protection for me and the wife (keep that in mind because she has fairly weak muscles from her autoimmune disease).

What kind of gun is it?!??! If it's an old 1911 or something it might be worth something too.... 1891 and before I believe don't have standard numbers... Some do and some don't....

    Edit: ATF web page answers..

    https://www.atf.gov/firearms/faq/curios-relics.html

Q: What is a firearm curio or relic?
Firearm curios or relics include firearms which have special value to collectors because they possess some qualities not ordinarily associated with firearms intended for sporting use or as offensive or defensive weapons. To be recognized as curios or relics, firearms must fall within one of the following categories:
Have been manufactured at least 50 years prior to the current date, but not including replicas thereof; or
Be certified by the curator of a municipal, State, or Federal museum which exhibits firearms to be curios or relics of museum interest; or
Derive a substantial part of their monetary value from the fact that they are novel, rare, bizarre, or from the fact of their association with some historical figure, period, or event.

Wouldn't it be okay since it's from a parent anyway? Parent to child transactions need no transfer, but a lot of shit changed this year I'm out of the loop a bit.

I believe the interfamily transfer is no longer legal. Check calguns wiki.

Not in Washington, I am no longer legally allowed to shoot my dads guns because they are registered under his name.

Sounds like a relic. Relative was a railroad police officer during prohibition in the 1920s and it was used in that service.

As for other comments on transfers, the current regs said I'd have to have a FSC certificate prior to taking possession. Then within 30 days after taking possession, I'd need to register it and pay $19. This is what wasn't clear if dealing with an old family heirloom. I mean, if he dies it becomes ours by law and no "gift from parent to child" takes place, thus those requirements don't apply. Then it would be legal to own it without registering it...unless the busybodies in Sac have some other requirements related to wills and inheritances.

Firearm willed to you by family death has the same requirements. You fill out the same form, pay the same $19, but only after you have your HSC.

It's not to say you have to register the firearm. You should (according to California). Pleanty of legally owned unregistered firearms that still exist in California today. For all intensive purposes one could argue that your dad gifted to you 25 years ago and nobody would be any the wiser and there would have been no requirement to register it then. But if you want to go by the letter of the CA law today, you should register it.

I'll add one other note. If the gun WAS gifted to you 25 years ago, and you decide to illegally conceal carry it (assuming you don't have a CCW) and get caught, instead of it being a misdemeanor, it's now a felony charge (as well as if you decide to use it in any crime).
But there is nothing illegal about ownership and usage (target, sport, etc.) of an unregistered firearm so long as it was obtained legally. I'm sure you can read between the lines here.

Brought this from the old home to the new last night. I need to shoot it badly. Has a new slide fitted and is yet unfired since the work was done. It WAS super accurate.

Also if you know a good lawyer/attorney talk to him about putting your guns in a trust/will type deal. :)

    That is no fun.

You sell GunVault handgun safes at your shop? Or similar?
