DHS strips Arizona sheriff of authority to patrol for illegal immigrants

    From USA Today:

Arizona Sheriff Joe Arpaio says he will continue his controversial "crime suppression operations" despite a Department of Homeland Security decision to strip him of authority to arrest suspected illegal immigrants based solely on their immigration status, the East Valley Tribune reports.

“It’s all politics,” says Arpaio, sheriff of Maricopa County.
Arpaio will still have the power to check the immigration status of people booked by his officers, but not the authority to conduct street patrols looking for illegal immigrants.

His “crime suppression operations” are saturation patrols in designated areas where deputies would find illegal immigrants by stopping them for traffic infractions and minor violations, the paper says.
The department of Justice and other federal agencies are investigating the sheriff’s office on accusations of racial profiling during the operations, the paper says.

Arpaio said he will be able to still conduct the crime sweeps under state human smuggling laws and an obscure federal law that allows local police to arrest illegal immigrants.

A spokesman for the Phoenix office of ICE declined to comment until after pending agreements with the country are signed.

    Edit: Hmmm? Homeland Security???

That's whats wrong with this country. One guy out there is trying to do things the right way, the way they are supposed to be done, and our government is shitting all over him. Criminals have too many damn right. Of course he's profiling, how else do catch the illegals? You dont stop the whites and blacks and check to see if they are illegals from Mexico do you? If you know, or have ever seen what happens to illegals its bullshit. They give them a meal, put them on a bus, and give them a free ride back home. What the fuck? I need to stop now before my head explodes. Just my opinions. Sorry about the language, just pissed!

Wrong. The law is there to protect everyone. even asses that decide to break them. Miranda Rights, they're there for a reason, mostly so we don't turn into what Soviet Russia was.

And Joe is just like a little kid, screaming "Look at me! Look at how tough I am!" Granted, illegals are a problem in Arizona (I got plowed into by a drunk illegal on my motorcycle about 6 months back) BUT the way he goes about it, he might as well make it illegal to drive while Mexican. He needs to maybe go after all the meth labs we have, or *gasp* clean up the crooked politicians in the Arizona legislature.

maybe that's what we need. americans think it's their God given right to do what they want with the world.

when the law is broken, in the case of people who are in tent city, you forfiet your rights. miranda rights are b.s. a gangbanger commits a crime, another gangbanger as asked about who commited the crime, and they both don't have to say anything. the have the right to remain silent. crime grows because we don't say anything about it.

only bad things grow in the dark, and if we don't shed a light on the situation no one bothers.

and it sucks to be profiled(i'm mexican, look like i was born there, even though i've only been there twice). both i would rather be profiled then allow for illegals to get away with breaking laws. and i'm not saying all immigrants break laws.

if meth labs are the problem then it needs to be stopped at the root, which is that mexican cartels produce most of the u.s. meth. busting the meth lab is only damage control.

This is a very tough issue because i'm also mexican. If you see me, you think Mexican. It sucks for these illegals because they come from a VERY poor lifestyle. I go to Mexico often and feel extremely sorry for them as they cannot even visit the great America we live in. I think we as Americans take our America for granted. These people were not fortunate to be born here and want a better lifestyle... Wait!! I do agree that they should do it the correct way and wait just like everybody else that has to wait for YEARS to get passports or w/e... I don't agree with them being here illegaly because my taxes are paying for them to be here while they don't pay taxes.

With that being said, i don't agree with this guy racially profiling people and looking for a reason to pull a mexican over to see if he's an illegal alien. The reason i don't agree with that is because FUCk man, i'm mexican and if I don't have mud flaps on my truck(just and example), this cop is going to pull me over because he sees a mexican driver, starts looking to see what he can pull me over for. ANY little thing to get pulled over for will get me pulled over by this guy. I bet if there were 3 other trucks ("White" drivers) stopped at a red light and none of us had mud flaps, he's going to pull me over because i might be illegal? Bullshit. What if one of those "white" guys has 5 kilos of cocaine in his truck?

I agree that illegals should be sent back because they did not follow the law and come into the country legally. BUT racial profiling is not right. Whether you are Mexican, White, Black, Asian, blue, green or whatever. Mexicans do make some Damn good Tacos though! And i mean the type you eat.:D

Interesting. I have many Hispanic friends, and a couple from Mexico, and they came here legally. The 2 I know that come from Mexico are rather pissed that these "Ilegals" are comming here, and taking benefits, and jobs, that they (my friends) worked hard to get. And it seems most of the ones are gang members or other criminal types.

I'll just say that I worked with 4 guys , 2 of whom were illegal Mexican immigrants. If you ask me, most Americans would learn an awful lot from hanging out with people like the guys I worked with. Not only did they absolutely bust their asses and had a positive work ethic, but they did something I seldom see native born Americans do: They took care of their families. 2 of the guys were helping their parents pay for their mortgages, and another was helping his Dad pay for a truck. They had me over all the time. There was a real sense of family and they really looked out for each other. One of them was from Mexico City. It sounded like a miserable experience. He made shit for living and lived in a shack. If you're poor in Mexico, then you'll stay poor. That's how it is. So either you barely survive or you take the chance and jump the fence.

There's a lot of anger over this issue, and I can guarantee its not all just because they're breaking the law either but rather something uglier. But after working with these guys I'd almost bet that if it was the other way around and America was like Mexico, a lot of the same people making noise about this would be the first the jump the fence.

There- I'm off my bench and off to eat lunch.

This is a little off subject here, but I have a question. I have noticed that there have been a few people replying to this thread that have referred to themselves as "Mexican." Do you live in Mexico? Are you visiting in this country? If you are in this country legaly, and are citizens, aren't you an American? Do you not have pride and respect for this country? Why do you describe yourself as a Mexican? Unless you still live there, it's about time you start showing some pride in this country. Whether you were born here, or have immigrated, you are now AMERICAN. Fly the U.S. flag, not the Mexican flag. You can have pride in your heritage, but U.S. first. If you would rather be called a Mexican, then perhaps Mexico would be a better place for you. Im not EUROPEAN, I am AMERICAN! Try it, you may like it!

    +1 on the tacos!

Regarding mud flaps, window tinting, front license plates, things hanging from rear view mirrors, sub woofers blasting, bald tires, burned out lights, etc. These are all things that police use to "see what's going on." At one time I wore hair nearly down to my waist. I would think "why the hell is this guy hassling me?" Today it's having a face that looks like it was magnetized and the guy stuck his head in a bolt bin. There are certain things that we do have control of. Sticking out to a cop isn't a good thing (IMO). We should all learn to deal with our need for attention in a better way (myself included). I've grown to like my hair short. Maybe not as much as a fashion thing as much as a "I no longer get hassled thing."

I have a car with some 'high risk' elements (no front plate, tint where it shouldn't be) and when I drive that and get pulled over for those things I look at myself. I have also been in court for a couple of tickets (many warnings). Both time in court one of the first things that 2 different officers said to the court was something like "Mr. Murphy was very polite to me." The way we act in many (not all) cases can very much affect the outcome.

Profiling? I'm of Irish heritage - I look like a drinker ;) so, I let my gf drive anytime I partake.

Oh yeah, it depends how smart that cocaine smuggler was. Did he do a walk around his car to make sure he would give a cop an excuse? Did he have current registration? Did he keep his radio at an acceptable volume? Was he well groomed? If he did/is, he's probably a pro and not a hired mule.

    Now back to those tacos!

They use these same "tactics" around here for drunk driving, especially if it is 1:30am on a Saturday. Missing a turn signal is an easy way to get a local to pull you over. Do that during the day and it is like it never happened.

I was born in America, I am an American Citizen but i am Mexican. Maybe we just look at it a little differently. Actually i do consider myself American, Mexican-American to be exact. I was just saying "i'm Mexican" because if you saw me, I guarantee you would not think "American" (Not saying that you would think of ethnicity right away, i'm just saying) You would think "Mexican". I do have pride in being American. I am VERY proud to be American. I Love this country and what it stands for but regardless of that, i do consider myself Mexican. Sorry, Mexican-American.
In my opinion, i don't think saying i'm Mexican makes me not proud of being American.
