Glad you found it, did you find what made it short out? You've got a problem somewheres else if it melted the connector. If that connector gives you trouble down the road you can unpin the wires and replace it.

Thanks for the closure, OP. Don't mind the assholes, that's just part of the internets.

The 6 cyl crank sensor has 2 terminals. Resistance should be roughly 2K ohms at normal temps. For the 4 cyl sensor, look at the end with the three blade connectors. Orient it so that the two sides with "stuff" on the outside of the connector (locking tab, etc) are on top and to your right. The left side (this is a triangular shaped connector) will just have a small nib for alignment. Measure resistance between the two connectors on the top edge. cold = 1.6k - 2.7K, hot = 2.0K - 3.2K.

The two correct pins should be labeled something like NE+ and NE-.

looks just to be a bad (loose) pin in the plug - when i had it apart it seemed like a defect from assembly-

That's a possibility, thanks for coming back and updating! At least you won't have to worry about your fuel pump for a while. Lol

I pulled this off google, top right is an 11 pin, just like the OPs appears to be... This might not be the right diagram though, maybe he'll chime in and confirm that his looks like this?

I've worked on a couple of GMs that have serious fuel pump issues. First, they used a crappy fuel pump electrical connector back at the fuel pump. That caused an unexpected current drain that would melt wires back there, or up front at the fuel pump relay (and even melt the relay over time) or the fuel pump fuse. First one we ran across the fuse was blown, replaced it and all was well. Came back a month later same problem, won't start. Checked fuse. Blown. Replaced it. Still no start. Checked relay, blown. At this point I chased down every connection from the front of the truck back to the fuel pump. When I got to the connector back there, I found a puddle of plastic. Discovered there was a TSB to replace the connector with one that was more robust. New fuel pumps even came with the TSB connector already installed on the FP side, you simply had to cut the wires off the harness and connect to the new wiring harness included.

Connectors don't melt due to cosmic rays or sunspots. Something's up. That "something" can be REAL CLOSE to a source of fuel (the gas tank and fuel lines) to feed a fire if one starts. Not much fun to drop a tank, but I'd have it on the ground pretty quickly to be sure that all is well. You CAN have a bad fuel pump that will pull excessive current if the motor is dragging. That's more than a little dangerous since the motor is actually buried in the fuel.

Yes, a loose connection ( resistance ) turns the connection into a heater.
