I pulled a similar weight from Winnipeg, MB. all the way to Mount Rushmore (5300lbs) and the tacoma amazed me during the 17 hour trip. The entire trip the truck held fourth gear, TC locked and trans temps stayed around 190, and it was hot outside! From Rapid city to the mount rushmore KOA campground you roughly go up one mile, I held 55mph shifting in between 3rd and 4th and the truck stayed cool the entire time. I checked all the fluids why we got to our campsite and everything was fine. I have a good weight distribution hitch, a large aftermarket trans cooler, and scan gauge monitoring temps. I would have no problem doing this trip again. Gas milage, well, it was horrible, averaged around 9mpg! Most in part due to driving against the wind almost every day.

Glad Im not the only one who noticed that... that taco was a DCLB which is not available as an off road.

Regardless that video may have not been super informative but gave me a little more confidence in my truck since I need to tow a 6x12 uhaul trailer over that same pass (granted going the other way) come october. Ive towed that same trailer like 300 some miles on flat land here in florida with 4400 lb payload total but over that pass had me sketched out... I was about to find a new route through new mexico lol. They may not have maxed it out but really, who is gonna pull max payload over I70 like that haha thats insane!

As I said not super informative, but hey useful to some I suppose.

That's what I was thinking. Apparently you have to have a TRD model to have 4x4 too, haha.

I actually really like their reviews. They definitely need to do a better job of educating themselves on what they're driving but I like what they do with the trucks they drive. I like seeing different manufacturers trucks being pushed to limits and seeing how they perform. I also feel like they're fairly unbiased. I will admit though, cowboy hat kinda annoys me. This isn't the wild west, you're sitting in a brand new truck, not on top of a horse.

Is anyone else surprised that Toyota actually gives these jokers a truck to dick around with? I wonder if I just need a youtube channel and a few hundred views to get my hands on a 30,000 dollar vehicle.

And granted thats the plan, I have a tow package and know how to tow pretty well. I dont know Im just used to towing in larger trucks. Its not that my skill level concerned me it was more my trucks ability I suppose, sometimes that tranny really worries me.

And yeah snow would not be fun to do that in. Ive gone down that pass with snow and a trailer behind me, thats not a good time haha.

I just wish the video would have been more thought out such as "we got X mpgs and the transmission was X degrees in the end" I dont know why everyone thinks they should have done max payload up the hill that way though, I feel staying under that by a half ton or more would just lead to a safer trip IMHO. Also really aggravates me that there was 0 research into that truck and they mentioned towing in 4wd on asphalt... on a highway... cause that TOTALLY wouldnt hurt anything right? also still sketched out that there was a TRD off road sticker on whats clearly a DCLB Sport model... like everyones said, very uneducated review but still informative at the basic level in its own respect.

I commute over that pass every day that doesn't start with a S and I've seen numerous tacomas hauling cars over that and they aren't going semi speed in that 3rd lane.. they're keeping speed. Didn't watch the video cause it was 16 minutes long. Who won?

Even with the tow package the transmission cooler is too small. Pulling 5000 lbs you'll notice it's tough to keep the temps below 200. Get yourself a big transmission cooler (I bough the trucool lpd4589) and even with the torque converter unlocked it will stay around 200. The nice thing about a bifpg cooler is that as soon as the TC locks the temps drop down fast into the 170s. It's no fun pulling and worrying about your transmission the entire time.

aires 3D mats, scan gauge II, rear differential breather relocation, and bakflip G2 bed cover.
Has anybody tried an electric fan on the trans cooler to see if it brings the temp down when pulling a heavy load.

it wouldn't work as well as a deeper transmission pan or more cores in the cooler.. or a 6 speed manual.:stirthepot:

Terrible like all of their "reviews". Just a couple of every day idiots driving cars and giving their uneducated opinions.

All he could say was that he liked it, but repeated what everyone else says "you just get the feeling that it's getting old." And "it feels trucky." 11 some minutes of wasting time.

The only thing he got right was the comment on the stupid fake hood scoop! ;)

Dont forget, if you buy a colorado you will be 100% MORE of a man than if you drove a car! Chevy said so and they wouldnt lie to me! :p

As Merc said. Uneducated. Note that in the raptor video it was the SAME TACOMA!!! video recap "ok guys we have a fake off road tacoma that we know nothing about but the sticker says off road so it must be! We have the stock street tires but I mean they havent lost grip there so they should be fine in the snow. Now over here we have a raptor with BFG AT2s so really theres no advantage here."

Just a whole lot of wow.

Agreed. Now we all know that in a way thats still comparing apples to oranges but this is comparing apples to potatoes lol. Its ridiculous in every way. If your going to compare an F150, a full size truck, to a Tacoma, a mid size truck, then use the same packages. Get an FX4 on stock tires vs an Off Road on stock tires.
