Without a ridge beam are you unconcerned about the rafters thrusting the exterior walls outwards under a heavy snow load or is your loft floor sheathing designed to keep the exterior walls from spreading ?

I have a 24' 2x6 ridge beam and the loft floor was intended to keep the walls from spreading.

Single 2x6 is a ridge board , which is different than a ridge beam

Damn , how heavy is that cottonwood material in those lengths ?

Do you have to get a permit where you are building ?

I didn't weigh it but it was all I could do to lift a 16 foot 2x10 by myself... I actually cut all my lumber to actual dimensions, i.e. a 2x4 is 2x4 not 1-1/2 x 3-1/2.

No permit required if it's not on a concrete foundation.

My folks talked about doing something like this 45 years ago. It never came to pass... in spite of a shelf full of the "Firefox" cabin building books.

Very cool to see a man go for it and make the dream happen. Keep at it! Great inspiration for me here in Oregon.

Lol! One Man Cabin - Build Thread.

I had two of my brothers and a future brother-in-law here for four days to help with the framing. Now that they are back in PA, it is just me working on it.
