Tire upgrade???

Time to replace original tires (06 4x2 PreRunner SR5 DBL w/stock16" Steel Wheels). Orginal size P245/75R16, Alternate size 265/70R16 (per toyota). Any advantages/disadvantages (Fuel, speedo, power, etc.) of running the 265/70R16? LT or P? I drive mostly street - daily. Very little off street but I do occassionally. I've been looking at the Michellin LTX A/T2 but can only get it in either LT245/75R16 or P265/70R16. The LT has more meat (17/32) than the P (14/32). Also considering the Michellin X-Radial but can only get it in P265/70R16 (13/32). I don't haul any loads - mostly just a cruiser. When I do go off-street, its usually on unpaved roads - nothing drastic, some rocks/holes, but sort of level. Any thoughts?

 

P265/70/16, they look better, the speedo will be very accurate, mpg roughly the same, no noticable power decrease, the P rated will ride better for your driving style and hold up just fine to moderate offroading.

 

In the LTX A/T2 (available in LT or P) or X-Radial (in P)? I have to get the tires from Costco - I live in Hawaii - limited resources. The A/T2 is on order - 3-4 weeks. X-Radials are in stock. The A/T2 looks/is more agressive.

 

I've never run Michelins, but I don't like the look of the X-Radial. I'd order the A/T2 and go with a P rated, looks like it should handle some offroading just fine along with wet roads.

Yeah, I didn't care for the X-Radial profile either - It's more for street use anyway. The A/T2, even in the P-metric, is still a more agressive tire. The only differences between that and the LT-metric version is the amount of meat and the load rating.

 

Even with the P rated the load rating is more than enough for these trucks and higher than what comes stock. The tread depth isn't much different for me to be concerned. They are lighter, so less impact on mpg and they are usually a little cheaper.

Yeah I recently had the same question. I called Toyota to find out just how big I could go with out voiding the warranty. I had the stock 245/75/R16 on mine, and it made the truck look a little scrawny so I upsized to a Firestone Destination A/T 265/70/R16 and it looks much better and did not affect my MPH and there is still plenty of room in the wheel well. The tires are great, I live in Minnesota, I was told the tires were rated #1 on TireRack for the best A/T tire.. do not have a lift or any serious mods to my truck (yet).. Maybe could have gone to a 265/75 though..

 

The Michellins LTX A/T2s are on order at Costco. Waiting on production. I ordered the P265/70/16 since it is the "recommended" alternative size according to Toyota and Michellin. Coscto won't install anything bigger. :-( But I also have a deadline of Oct 30 so that I can pass my Safety inspection (I have a temporary because of the tires). Since the tires are not paid for yet (and they were cheapest at Costco), I have a backup plan which may just lead me to getting a larger tire if the shop will install it. But cost is always a factor.

 

So I just got a call from COSTCO today saying that the tires I have on order (Michelin LTX A/T2 in P265/70/16) is on a nationwide backorder and will be another 4 weeks minimum. I've been calling around to other dealers in Hawaii and no one has this tire/size combination in stock. COSTCO has the LT245/75/16 in stock but do I really want to go that route? Undecided.

 

I went from 254 to 265...the 245's just look too small IMO. I'd wait and get what you really want. Sucks things are so hard to get in Hawaii, have you tried finding them online? I'm sure shipping is probably outrageous though. Good Luck!

 

Okay, So the Michelin AT2 can't be found here in Hawaii. On backorder till at least mid-November. I already failed my safety inspection due to the tires and have until the end of this month to correct it. I've looked into Tire Rack again, and of the top 5 tires in All Terrains only the FS Destination AT, GY Wrangler SilentArmor, and BS Dueler AT Revo are available anywhere in Hawaii. I'm leaning towards the Firestone in a P265/70/16 - currently on sale with a 15% discount. Anyone with comments/suggestions on this?
