Son has a '13 he bought brand new. Loves it. I'd roll one in a heartbeat if an appliance is what you need. (and most of us need at least one)

The 'story' may or may not be fishy. It could be just a demonstrator that several folks have been able to try for a few days. Even used as a loaner. Could be chick-a-dee was the last 'tester' and flunked finance 101. Most demos are flipped under 1k miles for a reasonable savings.

I'd first try to negotiate the same price on a spankin new model, and see how you do. If that comes out close, maybe go there.

But if the car is the best price (significantly, not marginally) and it's equipped/color you want, I'd do it. It's way better than the used ones at those prices. Just verify the 1st owner, full warranty etc. stuff. And yea, ask for a spare to sweeten the deal a bit.

We just sold a 2004 corolla to a family friend for her son to drive. had 250K + miles and is still running incredible strong! Our other corolla got totaled out with 300K+ on the odo was a late 90s. My advice is to never trust a salesman.

Just filled out a form on www.edmunds.com and got a few calls/email within minutes.

At another dealership the sales guy gave me a price about $500 cheaper than the first dealership. I'll try and use that information to leverage with the first dealership on getting a new car (not w/ 500 miles) for a cheaper price.

    Now you're clicking!

There is no loyalty from the dealership to the buyer. So don't worry about loyalty from your wallet to the dealership.

It's an appliance, and the best deal you can strike becomes the winner. You can still have it serviced at the closest place to your home; Hyundai doesn't care, and neither will the servicing agent. It's just another bit of work that they get paid for.

Yeah I totally understand your logic. I'd be pretty surprised if the dealer I first worked with doesn't come down on the price for a brand new, never driven vehicle.

Way back when the Pony was new and they couldn't give them away a guy I worked with was given a 1 million mile warranty by Hyundai. That was Hyundai's first and second mistake. :) Buy a Toyota.

There is some truth to the salesman's story. These days it's common for dealerships to give a vehicle to a customer before attaining actual approved financing for it. They do this for a few reasons. One, to get you attached to the thing. Fall in love so to speak. Two, they shop your deal around to multiple lending institutions to see which one will give them the best kick back. There is a toyota dealer here in town, Toyota of Orlando, that is has been put on blast for calling up customers as much as a month after the sale asking them to return the vehicle because they couldn't get financing approved for them.

I agree with CRU, the salesman probably isn't lying about what happened. It's pretty common for people to get tentative financing on a car and take it home before the company's finance division (or the third party bank financing their loans) has fully reviewed the app. Then the customer has to come back in and either pay extra down on the car, or give it back. Not saying you should or shouldn't buy it (honestly, I'd have no concerns with it as long as it checked out), but you shouldn't assume he's lying. I'm surprised he was honest with you, actually, and didn't just say it was a demo or mileage from test drives.

My friend has been driving Hyundai(s) for must be 20 yrs now. The one his youngest son is driving at college has 238K miles on it and still going strong. Normal stuff, timing bellts, brakes, shocks, couple tie rods. The one we got wiped out in 15 months ago was a 2011 Sonota. Car did it's job, all four corners got crunched in a nose stand almost rollover; all three of us walked away. I'd have no problem buying one or putting my family in one. Decent value for the money.

Good luck getting your best deal Op.

So last night I went to the dealership to continue negotiations on the car. When we showed up the salesman was working with a customer, so we worked with one of the managers (you know the all powerful guys on the podium).

He asked if we were going to purchase the car that we took home the night prior. I told him we weren't going to because we got a better deal on a new car (one without 600 miles on it) at a dealership closer to our home. We sat down at the table and started negotiating. He told me that he's never lost a sale over $300 and I replied "why would I pay more money for a car with more miles, when I could pay less money for a car with less miles?" The manager continued to talk about how the warranty starts the day I buy it... etc....

The manager then let my wife and I talk together alone at the table. The couple at a nearby table said "wow. After hearing how that guy was talking to you it makes me not want to buy a car." It did get pretty heated. While my wife and I were talking the manager dropped off his "best price" for the car with 600 miles on it, which came to $16,500 out the door. My wife and I talked about it and decided we'd rather pay a extra $150 at the other dealership and get a brand new one.

We walked back up to manager and told him we weren't going to take his deal. He got pretty upset and said he was losing money on the deal after paying commission. Realizing he was just pulling the sympathy card I said "I don't care if you're losing money, I care if I'm losing money." We ended up walking out of the dealership. Now on Friday I'm going to take invoice dealership 1 gave me with their best price being $16,550 out the door to the dealership 2 and see if they'll match it. I'm pretty sure he'll match it, even if he doesn't I don't mind paying a extra $150 ish at this other dealership for a car with no miles.

Thanks man! The prices I'm getting are a little lower than that, but in the same general area.

I'm not sure that it matters. TCO is what matters, and resale/residual value is one component of that, but not everything.

Just a couple of factors to consider. He'll have a lower initial cost + the time value of that money. And there is a fair chance that his insurance will be lower across the years. Elantra MPG is right up there with the Camry/Corolla, maybe even a bit better. Plus there's no evidence to indicate maintenance will be any higher. Later model Hyundai's are quite well made and parts aren't unusually priced.

If he's a long term owner (10+ years, and in the 100-200k range), the residual isn't going to be a real factor between the two.

While the 'Toyota tax' on many Toyota trucks is a real thing, it doesn't always spill over into other models the same way, at least not on ones that are in the age/mileage of what I mention above.

And a high(er) years but low low miles will bring a premium price in almost any marquee.

If you were there more than 30 minutes for all of this then he was wasting your time from the get-go. My previous ride was a 2009 Elantra Touring. Bought it used in 2010 with 9k on the clock. They transferred the balance of the warranty and gave me a good OTD number in a 15 minute phone conversation. I drove the Elantra right up until the day I traded it on my Taco and loved it. My Toy dealer low balled me ont he trade (the car was immaculate with 48k) but when squeezed met my bottome trade dollar. Aside from a recall switch and a clogged AC drain line, absolutely zero problems. It got killer mileage, had a decent ride for an econobox AND had a spare. Good luck with yer purchase.

They call them floor managers (and I suppose they are, in a sense), but they are really 'closers'.

I admire you and the wife for bucking up and walking out. Not everyone has the stones to do that.

It's time for the sales model to change to something more internet based. Other than showing people various models/equipment, there's really no reason for an actual sales staff anymore.

Other than to continue to take advantage of buyers.

Keep up your 'mission' and you'll do well.

I think the salesmen at our local Honda dealership are paid salary and not commission. Not sure how the buying process is there but seems like it would be better. I only buy cars outright so I'll never know.
