Toyota mentions that the '16 manual is focused toward off-road.

I've never really seen a manual truck run 35-50 in reverse while in low range 4wd

I see what you're getting at and do agree to an extent but a very low reverse would mainly be for rock climbers which usually have just more than stock gears.:)

What's wrong with the automatic? You're the first person I've heard say that.

Maybe it was just mine but: hard shifting, down shifting going down hill, and weird/inconvenient shift points

Another reason for a six speed manual... sorry I couldn't resist. :D

I've always had manuals and never had any problems with them. My current taco is getting closer to the 30yr mark and the only thing I've done trans wise is a new clutch but the one I removed was only about half worn. Still shifts fine though. :)

The manual sucked too. For me it was almost impossible to get a smooth start. I can drive my mom's gt500 with a stiff ass clutch smoother than I could drive the truck (yes I understand truck vs car). The manual had it's fair share of issues.

I would believe that if I couldn't drive my car and other vehicles smoothly lol

I have never liked a manual when off-roading. I have had 1 clutch on an old 4Runner burn up on a steep incline and I had to be pulled out by a Jeep.

Also annoying to have a chance to stall. And yes, the reverse gear is very tough to use on a steep tight hill.

Vehicles do require maintenance... how old was 'an old 4Runner'?

That doesn't make sense, I rarely shift while driving down the highway.

Not even when starting stopping? You're personally choosing which gear to be in?

Manual keeps you in the gear that you decide when off-road or on road. Having a six speed manual makes it even better when driving on road with a manual which is mainly used for off-road.

Some say that this can be done with an auto by shifting to the 1st, or the 2nd gear option on auto. Neither of those gears offers the finer tuning of gears provided with a manual when off-road.

Sure I do...I don't understand why people would prefer an manual for the highway, since once you're on it...you rarely have to shift...where-as off road I shift waaaay more.

The interstate here has a speed limit of 80, the Bi-Ways are 55-65, put it in high gear and forgitaboutit.

I have been driving manuals for over 27 years now, and prefer them over autos...the highway thing not liking manuals is just odd to me. If anything, you think people would like like autos for off road, since they don't have to shift.

No me mind you, autos just aren't as fun to me as a manual.

I think the only reason this manual can be considered not for the highway I'd because of its inefficient overdrive gear. Yes Toyota says real off roaders want a manual but many people say autos are better off road because it's a high shifting activity and no one wants to stall while offroad.

(typo in my one post "I don't understand why people would prefer an Auto for the highway"...should be "manual for the highway")

That is usually what I hear, autos now-a-days will get slightly better hwy mileage, and like them offroad...because...people really don't want to learn how to drive offroad.

One really isn't better than other, is simply personal preference. I get bored in an auto, that and my dad is in a wheel chair, pushing in a clutch reminds me not to take my legs for granted.

But to prefer a manual for hwy, is weird...heck, I usually set the cruise so I don't speed.

I prefer a manual because it's so much more fun to drive for me. The only reason I'm not looking for one to buy is the reason I stated previously, they aren't built like the Tacoma auto and I don't want one with that many miles. I'll get one when I buy new.

Same here, I like choosing my own gears. I do have an Isuzu Trooper as well, it is an auto, I really don't like driving it. Thought of swapping in a manny...but I really don't like the vehicle as a whole (I picked it up as 3rd spare vehicle)...so not worth the effort.

Still waffling on getting a new Tacoma or a fullsize....I really don't want to give up my manual trans.
