Does anyone do this? A lot of mods are done for the "cool look" factor, I am wondering if anyone puts racks on their shell but rarely if ever uses them?

Be honest, I know you are out there. I am debating doing it myself. I'd probably use it 1-2 x a year.

I use my shell rack to haul kayaks and my Rotopax gas cans when on the trail. I also made a rack set-up to store my fly fishing gear when I am fishing a few different spots in a day and don't want to break down the poles/reels and then have to re-set up the poles/reels each time I drive to a different location to fish. They may not look cool but they do serve a good purpose and having the shell and rack makes road trips so much easier!

I take the rack off (easy to do-about a 5 minute job) and hang it in the back of the garage when I don't need it on the truck.

You would be surprised how much more you will use it once you have it.

Well yea, clearly you don't fall into the category I was asking about. That's a sweet looking truck/set-up. I'm sure I'd use the racks more than I think I would...

When I had my Leer 100xr I had a Thule rack. I honestly hardly ever used it. Maybe 2-3 times a year for Kayaks. Sold the kayaks, then I sold the shell! But those racks do look damn good.

my topper has racks and i guess i fall into what you are talking about. That being said i do have plans for either a plat form style basket or a RTT, i just have to stop spending money on other truck parts.

Usually keep my rack off and stored in the garage unless I need it for something. The Thule system leaves small brackets on the cap that the racks snap into which can then be locked on. I think they look cool in a dorky way but add suck to the gas mileage so the stay off unless needed.

Yep, I think racks are necessary on a camper shell to offset how bad the shell itself looks on the truck haha  I generally leave both my shell and racks at home these days. They are both very useful at times though!

Racks can eat a little gas too, something to consider

stuff that makes it better for my use...
Use mine all the time for just cross bars or I swap the front runner rack from the landcrusier & put it on the tacoma for real trips. Works well for so many things...

I bought a used cap with a rack on it and thought I would never use that and now I don't know how I would get buy without it. I put kayaks, bikes, canoe, cargo basket, wood, and whatever else won't fit in the bed of my truck.

I use the racks to connect to a electric winch system that lifts my shell off the bed to the garage ceiling, also carry surfboards, wood, whatever I can't fit in the bed that's long.
