Ok y’all, I’ve searched and searched and no luck, so here’s a new thread.

I have a 2014 Reg Cab 4x4 with an automatic. I’ve had bad rear driveline vibes and shuddering from the git go. I’ve had five toyotas over the years and have learned that taking it to the dealer is the worst waste of time possible not to mention it’s 50 miles away. I’ve read a few threads about flipping the driveline and I did that, it didnt help. It did change the charachteristics of the vibes and shuddering, but I’d be hard-pressed to say if it was better or worse.

I want to order a CV shaft from Tom Woods, and am ready to do that, but I wanted to try and see if there are any of you who have fixed this successfully.

For those that have done it; Did you have to shim the rear to correct the pinion angle, or is it good to go as-is? If you did have to shim the rear axle, did you need longer U-bolts? Did you find that the CV shaft cured the problem?

Thanks in advance for the help!

im surprised with the reg cab you are having driveline vibes as the main source of the driveline vibes is the 2 piece design and the center carrier bearing thats all sorts of floppy.

Either way shims should fit with stock u bolts.

In the process you may discover the vibes are from U-bolts not torqued down properly at the factory.

After I lifted the rear I flipped the driveshaft, added a 3/4 inch spacer from 4crawler, replaced a u-joint, and put a 2 degree shim fat end towards the front of truck. No vibes or noise when I let off the gas.

    Interesting.

I did the driveshaft flip. Didnt help. I havent tried shimming the transfer/transmission down though. Its stock and clearly shouldn’t do it, but it always has, right from the start. My 2011 with a manual did it too.

Maybe I should rebuild the shaft and add a zerk to the slip joint and try that first.

Forgot to mention I also greased the splines on the slip, I went round and round with this problem. Good luck.

This seems to be fairly common on the teg cabs. I came to the conclusion that mine is caused by a loose slip joint. I replaced u joints, greased the slip joint, and flipped the driveshaft to no avail. The sound disappears when the bed is loaded down, so my opinion is that a driveshaft spacer would probably fix the problem. How thick, I dont know, which is why i never put one on. Ive just learned to live with it.

FYI 2wd 4th gen 4 runners have what looks to be a harmonic balancer / spacer thats about 3/4 of an inch thick at the pinion. A junkyard might have just what your looking for.

And yes a slip joint that is at its max extension or close to it will be loose and you will get vibes. Rule of thumb is to have 3x the diameter of the spline embedded

Thanks for info!! I'll definately check this out.

No lift here, so I guess the slip joint is slightly overextended from the factory.

its also very possible you have axle wrap issues going on as well, considering the stock springs are floppy as hell.
