And that's why I'll buy ethanol free. I don't care about anything except *uck the government for fixing a problem with a larger one. Also - knock reduction in my case seems to be a real thing with the 91 octane.

Unless you are referring to ethanol free than you will not get improved mpgs and will spend more. I run 87 and got 21.1 on last 2 tanks.

My 4.0 pings on 87 Octane, nothing with the 93 Octane...I will personally stick with the 93

Take to the dealer under warranty as your truck is rated for 87 from the factory.

This is true. Here in my town in Montana we have a SINGLE fuel "dispensary". I've talked to a guy who actually sells the fuel (the regional guy who makes all the money) and a guy who fills all the fuel trucks that supply the gas stations. Both have told me the same. All the gas stations in our city get their fuel from this single location. However, each chain of gas stations adds it's own proprietary "additives" or "cleaners" to the gasoline.

This is coming from horses mouth so to speak.

I've gotten significant differences in engine note and mpg using ethanol-free 89/93 vs other stuff. The factor that matters most seems to be whether there's corn juice in the gas or not.

Most of the time I just run 87 anyway.

It's not clear to me if Toyota did their validation of 87 octane fuel with or without ethanol. I know 87 octane with ethanol should perform the same as 87 without, in theory.

I've started running 93 again for the past couple fill ups. Engine is much quieter and doesn't ping in that dreadful 2k-3k range upon light acceleration, and when going up slight inclines or hills the truck downshifts on its own without requiring much additional gas pedal input. With 87, its like the truck is asking "do you really expect for me to go up this hill at constant speed? well, ok, if you really want to, I guess I'll downshift then."

I've said it before - over the lifttime of the truck, using 93 is one of the cheapest 'mods' you can do where you actually get performance benefit. It sure would be nice if someone would do a comparison on a dyno.

    Heres the real question.....

How many of you replace your air filter every 10-30k miles or clean it if its reusable?

How many of you clean your MAF sensor?

How many of you actually clean your throttle body and internal butterfly?

Doing this on a regular basis will yield a smooth performance increase once completed because over time these things get dirty and are less efficient.

Running a fuel injector cleaner over few oil changes can help as well.

Cant see myself using anything other than 87, but they only have 87,89,93 here in SE Louisiana. I'd like to try a tank of 91, just to see what all the fuss is about.

The manual says pinging under load is OK. Unlikely the dealer will do anything.

There is the reflash for the 12+'s for pinging.

If that were true that would mean ethanol is a filler and has no heat value when in fact it does case in point it is burned in race cars. If you figure the lower heat value of ethanol (around 60%) and the 10% blend factor the worst case would be about a 3% loss per tank full.

might just be mental. When I switched from Mobil1 to Penzoil Ultra I was certain the vehicle ran better, quiter and smoother. Might of just been fresh oil.
