There are multiple threads/posts on this site, but for more official word, check out safercar.gov. You can look up your vehicle by VIN or year/make/model and it will give you all of the information you are looking for.

Oh I'm well aware of the multiple threads here and safercar.gov. I work at a local Toyota dealership and have access to TiS/TBG, and I cannot find information on what's exactly is going to be done in this E02 (E12 is interim) recall. I don't think it can be any more official than having access to TiS/TBG to find out anything Toyota related (TSB, campaigns/recalls, enhancements, etc). But then again, I could be totally wrong... :p

Ah, right on. I thought I saw in one of the documents on safercar.gov that they were doing a 4-leaf pack replacement. It's been a while since I look at the documents though. I would imagine if anyone (aside from corporate) had more info, or access to it, it would be someone in a similar position to you. :D

Has anyone been re-imbursed for aftermarket leaf packs "after" receiving the recall letter?
The letter states that Toyota will re-imburse if new springs were purchased BEFORE the recall but I'm tired of waiting and plan on ordering a wheeler's leaf pack soon.

Third update. They had to hold my truck while Toyota sent someone out to inspect my truck. Since I have some aftermarket suspension pieces. It's only a leaf block on the rear and adjustable coilovers on the front.

So I may not be technically covered...

fourth update: Even with my aftermarket suspension Toyota still covered the cost of new leaf springs plus labor, no cost to me. They also said whenever Toyota figures out and sends out the proper new non rusting leaf springs they'll swap those in.

So it took a week to get my truck back, but totally covered!

Yes, got it several months ago, Toyota states still trying to figure out what the remedy will be, in the mean time they suggest you don't drive the vehicle as a leaf spring which suddenly breaks could rupture the gas tank. This will certainly be my last Toyota vehicle I ever own.

Is that what your letter states? I haven't inferred that from anything I have read. In fact, one of the documents (RCMN-14V604-1797 - Manufacturers notice to dealers) states, "Toyota generally requests that dealers do not deliver any pre-owned vehicles in dealer inventory that are covered by a Safety Recall until the vehicle has been remedied. However, in this case, unless prohibited by your state’s law, dealers can deliver un-remedied, pre-owned vehicles if they disclose to the customer that the vehicle is subject to a Safety Recall and Toyota will send them a notification when the remedy is available.".

This doesn't sound at all like it is a critical issue and that they recommend not driving the vehicle. Feel free to read up on the issue. It is a inconvenience, but there has been no reports of punctured gas tanks or fires. I think you are either over reacting or received poor information.

If you would like to read the 10 official documents related to this recall, go to safercar.gov and enter your Make, Model, and year in the drop down boxes and scroll down to "RECALL Subject : Leaf Spring may Fracture and Puncture Tank". There you will see a link to access the 10 documents. Once you click on the link for the 10 documents, they will appear under the section labeled "NOTES".

    I hope this helped.

I think this is pretty amusing. They issued a recall, which is definitely "serious" or it would just be a typical TSB. But 6 months later no remedy is available. Must be this will be an outstanding update for those of us with these springs. Nothing in 6 months would mean new metallurgy, new design, new fasteners, clever composite materials, you-name it. I mean, how hard is this to fix? They could just go to some of the aftermarket spring companies and say "we will make your day, we will buy everything you can produce for the next 12 months." Or they could continue to scramble around. I called Toyota 1-866 today. Still same old "no information on a date that the remedy will be available." After six months? (actually much longer, they knew about this way before the recall was actually issued.)

I'm a huge fan of the Taco. But in today's world, a strike here and there against a company and first thing you know, they are out of the market. This is NOT good for consumer confidence and satisfaction.

Almost 1 year ago today, the left side rear leaf spring snapped on my 2009 Toyota Tacoma. Today, the right side rear leaf spring snapped while I was driving. Now I get to hear Toyota dealer tell me about the recall but no remedy established by Toyota ( now 8 months after the fact).

My drivers side leaf spring snapped and when I took it to the local dealer they said "Don't worry it's covered by your extra care warranty." I have to come back when the part comes in but they recommend a $149.99 alignment be done when it is installed. WTF?? After reading this thread I call foul.

I don't know why you'd need an alignment if you are just replacing rear springs?

    Stock for now...
If they replace the springs under warranty , they can sure pay for the damned alignment and yes it's a good idea . There is a possible change in the f/r tracking after installing a new set of springs .

Im no mechanic, thats for sure. I got the recall letter back in October maybe.. ?? I had just replaced my driver side leaf spring, and I replaced the passenger side back in May. My question is , Can broken leaf springs affect the wear on my shocks?? Cause now every time I hit the smallest bump ( I live in PA and the roads are horrid ) it feels like the bed of my truck is going to fall off. Anyone else having this problem?? If so is there a solution ?? OR is it even possible??

If your leaf spring snapped, take the truck to a dealer to get the leaf pack replaced on Toyota's dime. This is all covered by the documents on NHTSA's Safercar.gov web site.

Note there's nothing magical about the "remedy". It will be a matter of installing the same leaf packs as used on current production trucks which have the extra clip. The "remedy" is taking long because getting suppliers to crank out an extra half a million leaf packs on top of current production demands takes time.

Tell me about it! They should include this!! No reason I should have to pay for it IMO.
