Going to install coilover shocks . Just wanted to know if I could use this method to uninstall the shock absorber assembly and spring by removing the three nuts from the support sub - assembly and pull it out as one unit ?

Take out the two bolts that hold the lower ball joint to the steering knuckle, take out the bolt holding the strut to the lower arm, loosen the two inner bolts on the lca, then drop the lower lca down as far as it goes take the 3 nuts off at the top where the top hat is held and slide it out.

This method is awesome. When I lifted my 4Runner, I used a spring compressor from Autozone which, I gotta say, seems a heck of a lot more dangerous than doing it this way. I just lifted my Tacoma and I was done in a fraction of the time using this method.

    Good info.
I did the borrowed spring compressor tool last time.
I want to adjust the height, so I will try this method instead.

Anyone with heavy duty or long springs use this method?

Did it on my civic years ago with tanabe gf210 springs and when trying to decompress the spring was so stiff my car started lifting instead of the LCA coming up. Don't want to have that issue with the truck. Can anyone who installed on there own without a spring comp verify?

I've done it with 883 OME springs, however I'm unsure on the spring rate... I believe it's ~600?

I did procomps 3" lift coils and OME 886's. Where you put the jack stands helps.

Yeah I was even considering putting a jack stand under the frame in rear on the opposite side I'm working to add more weight to the front corner.

^Probably not, because the Icon spring ends are closed and ground flat, while the 5100 perch is slanted to accommodate OEM spring ends. Attempting to use the Icon spring will likely cause either the shock or the spring coil to fail in bending.

The new Bilstein 6112 60mm shock might be able to accept Icon springs, but I haven't seen anyone try it.
