Plasmas do have a slight buzz at altitude but I am willing to deal with a little buzz for great picture quality at a low cost. Had to grab one of the last plasmas before they don't make them anymore.

FYI LEDs are LCDs. They are both an LCD panel it's just that one is LED backlit instead of CFC backlit. Plasma still has the best picture quality.

I like my led tv's they do just fine. I've experienced plasma and the problems that go with them (not so much in my current location, but when I lived in summit county) so I'll take the longevity, being as how I'm looking to build another house at altitude again. My brother swore by the plasmas and when he was my room mate he had to replace them. He had two and one I don't know the brand but he had issues.

I have no idea what problems you had but I know plenty of people who have had them for quite a long time w/o any issues. I had two that were nearly a decade old (one Gen 2 and one Gen 3 PDP) and neither one ever gave me a single issue. One was a Maxent which was a rebranded Panasonic that I paid $2,200 for when the Panasonic version was $4,800 so that was a pretty kick ass deal and the other was a Vizio which also reviewed quite well and nobody in the States even knew what the name was at the time. Plasmas are fantastic displays and the horror stories are largely exaggerated and if you break it in and calibrate it properly the odds of you ever seeing any of them are slim to none... Especially today's PDP's.

We were college age kids so I would imagine he did not break it in correctly, I don't even know how you would do it. But I remember the picture would be dull in certain areas. They replaced it under warranty. I've only seen that at higher elevations so I don't know, but I do plan on growing old at 10k + feet :D. I'm not talking shit about them I'm just saying that my LCD/LEDtv's do just fine. I've got a 40 inch Sony lcd that I've had since college and it's still kicking pretty well. Can't say that the picture is as good as current tv's on the market but it's in my room and I don't watch much tv there if you know what I mean. we going to get you and your family out fly fishing this year or what?

There's a break in for a plasma? I just plugged it in, found the cable channels and watched it.
Love mine btw, don't mess with my plasma. :D

Yeah, if you are really serious about breaking in your plasma they make special DVDs you are supposed to play for 100hrs before you watch anything. Needless to say I am not serious about breaking it in and will just turn it on and watch tv.

    You damn skippy!

From the factory the contrast and brightness are WAY too high. This is so stores can pop it on a shelf and it looks amazing to the ding dongs walking by who don't do any independent research and compulsory purchase big ticket items. Read: 99% of Americans. The basic idea is to drop the brightness and contrast to about half of whatever the factory 'flame torch' setting is and don't watch any static images for 100hrs. After that, you should calibrate properly & you will likely never ever have a single issue and do watch/do just about whatever you want. It should also be noted that in the almost impossible event that you do all of this and still get burn-in you can play a non-static image and likely self heal in just about every case. The unfixable instances of burn-in are generally from someone doing the exact opposite of everything I just said. LCD/LCD have come a long way (I have two 60" LEDs and a 55" LED currently) but if you want the best possible PQ plasma is the only way to go. If I come across another good deal on some quality PDP's these LEDs will be gone in a heartbeat. I miss my blacks. :(

    Low blow pole dancer. :D

I wouldn't go that far and you likely will be just fine doing what you're doing. The single biggest thing you can do to ANY type of display panel is to calibrate it. If you have $1,000 to spend you will be better off to buy a $750 display (any type) and then put $250 into professional calibration using meters/computers. The difference really is night and day. If you search around online you can generally get a good idea of the settings for your model number which will get you in the ballpark but even within models there are variances so the only real way is a professional calibration. I realize most won't do this but you'd be amazed how poorly calibrated your display is from the factory not to mention you will extend the life expectancy of your investment exponentially by simply turning down the brightness & contrast.

I have three plasmas. A 46" Samsung that was part of the closing on my house (9 years old). A 50" Pioneer Elite (approx 7 years old). According to Cnet still considered one of the best pictures ever. And recently 60" and 50" Panasonic Vieras (3 and 2 years old). All of them have been near perfect. Ironically the best rated and most expensive, the Elite, has given me the most issues. 1. It's always been a bit noisy/buzzy. A known issue w/ plasmas and is directly related to brightness and ambient temperatures. Never really a deal breaker or that noticeable unless you were listening very closely with low volumes. 2. It started not working but a hard reset and an adjustment made to the TV Guide menu, turned it off, and it's given us no more issues. Not a plasma issue but a operating system glitch. The newest Panasonics have been excellent. The 60" is heavily used for gaming and looks spectacular.

    Check Cnet for tuning specs.

Sean I'm going to keep it for now. I have cover king seat covers coming, fixes the grill, and am going to put addicted a bumpers on it. Need to do a front skid at some point as well, or just find a stock one to slap on it for now. Eventually want to repaint the hood and front fenders. Then everything will be up to par enough to keep it for a while. I wasn't fixing every little thing before because I was planning on getting rid of it.

I was just about to ask if anyone wants to hit some trails soon. I work until 3pm weekdays, but my weekends are open. An afternoon run during the week would have to be fairly close.
