Yeah, that looks like what it was. Guy told me it was a "$300 antenna".

Quality product? Or is there better?

Not sure I want the 4'- 6' x 2"- 4" thick tube hanging off the back of the truck just yet.

    Why do people use those?

The yaesu 857 I believe is the one I've been leaning towards, rumor has it that it's due for an upgrade though so I am holding on for the moment and going to look for a non mobile setup for cheap

Just thought id share my simple mobile setup. i only currently run V/Uhf in the truck, Yaesu FTM-350AR. I use a Tech Deck from http://www.birddawgindustries.com. Ram mount RAM-B-111BU as a base for radio heads. I don’t recall the PN# for the arm i used between Tech Deck and Ram Base. Antenna is a Larson 2/70B mounted to a Breedlove NMO mount #078, right in the middle of the roof.

    Yes.
Alright I'll play along now that I've actually done some installation.

Setup for "stationary" use during CQWW 2015
    [IMG]

View from the drivers seat. The small control head in front of the shifter is a Kenwood TM-D700. The body of that radio is hanging from the underside of the driver's seat. The larger control head above the third cup holder is for a Kenwood TS-480 Sat. This is held in place with a Ram X-Grip mount.

The TM-D700 has an external speaker that's under the center console, and fires up through the plastic tray to the right of the shifter. The TS-480 has a speaker on the back of the control head and didn't require an external speaker.

The short mobile antenna on the roof, is for a Byonics MicroTrak-RTG APRS transmitter. The little black box next to the base of the antenna is a GPS
    [IMG]

I've run several more pieces of Coax, and a serial cable through this port in the back. It's one of a very few places I've found Egress from inside the cab of the Truck.

The Transmitter for the APRS unit is in the storage box under the driver's side rear seat. This is a 10w dedicated 2m APRS transmitter.

Finally in a moment of weakness. Or because all the OffRoad and Overland groups I've joined in Texas seem to use them. I installed an 11m CB in the truck. The antenna is a 24" Wilson my dad had laying around the garage. It doesn't tune up any better than 3:1 SWR. I really don't care. :)

The Radio itself is a Maxon MCB-30, which is hidden inside the arm rest.

I want to, but haven't had the time to really figure it out. Seems like more and more events around here are using them.

My parent's used winlink to stay in comms with nonhams while at sea.

On full volume I can hear it with the lid closed. and the mic cable didn't need a trim to fit outside either

APRS Droid received an update today, after 19 months of inactivity. I was wondering if George Lukas had abandoned the project...

    New update looks good.

I feel better now about the thought of purchasing a Mobilinkd Bluetooth TNC.
