I've never done it, but with the money you would lose on a trade you could put that towards a custom paint job instead. Provided you are buying the truck and not just leasing it. I'd have a hard time accepting the money lost on a trade to swap colours... But also wouldn't want to be stuck with something I didn't like.

Couldn't agree more. My paint has a couple scratches that seem to just appear out of nowhere... Scratches too easy IMO

It's leased so I'm not painting it.

Even if it weren't leased I wouldn't paint it unless all traces (door jams, engine compartment) of the MGM could be covered...and for that level of job, I would lose less by trading it.

3 years...2-1/2 to go. My plan was to buy it out at the end of the lease.

I started off with a 10' MGM and personally I thought the colour was great, although it seemed like half the tacoma owners in my area picked that colour :( now have the BRM which is a really nice colour but man those scratches sure show easily. I think when I'm done with this truck (which will be a long time) I will go your route with a lighter colour.

Turn in the lease and get a new one you like at the same place, problem solve. IMHO

Maybe you could add some graphics, stripes, or something that could offset the color a little bit? Maybe wear rose colored glasses. That would change the color a bit. Check out the new Tacoma, drive it and see if you like it. If you do, buy the new one when the lease is up. Toyota will have had a couple years to work out a few of the new model problems. If you do not like the new style then trade it in on a new 2015 in the right color. By that time the 2015 model year might be going for a bit of a discount that could offset then hit on the trade in.

spend thousands on a lift and wheels and tires just for "looks" and no one bats an eye. (OK maybe they affectionately call you a "mall crawler")

spend a couple thousand on depreciation by trading in for a different color for "looks" - and everyone loses their minds....

Here's a fun exercise. Figure out how much you'll lose to trade it for a color you like. Imagine you have that much money sitting in front of you.

Now decide whether you'd rather spend that on changing the color of your truck - or some equivalent thing you could have for that much money

    from paying down debts,
    traveling to disneyland or somewhere,
buying something cool you want but haven't had the money for

    Then decide.

I've already determined that the Gen3 isn't for me, so if I'm going to get another Gen2 I want to do it soon instead of continuing to pay for a color I don't like.

While I can admire almost any tacoma in any color, personally I choose either white or black for any daily driver. Anything else I might grow tired of, or some days like it less than others, but thats just me.
I bought black (newer year, not bsp) because I dreamed of a 4x4 toyota truck in black since I was a kid because Back to the Future was and still is my favorite movie.
I love the new black, it looks satin in most areas, and much easier to keep clean and doesn't look as bad when it's dirty as other black cars I've had in the past.

Trade-in value from my local Toyota dealer has me losing $3k. I think they can do better if I really get serious. If this is to be a 10+ year truck, I'm absolutely willing to lose money.

Sounds like you've made up your mind then.

Do it and don't look back. :)

What's the new color going to be?

I would trade my truck in for a new color only if I woke up and it was Speedway Blue...
