So today I had a pretty creepy encounter with two guys in the parking lot of my local Academy Sports. I went in to purchase some ammo real quick during my lunch break and was only in there for about 10 mins, tops. When I came back out, an older red Tundra was sitting really close next to my truck (there were open spaces ALL around mine) with two shady looking dudes just staring at me. My driver's side door was cracked open, and the door was unlocked. I squeezed in between my truck and theirs, opened the door, got in, locked it, and started digging through everything to see if anything was stolen. Nothing was, thankfully (that I know of). I rolled down my window, told them to go eff themselves, , took a picture of their license plate then drove off. They just smiled and waived.

I specifically remember locking the door because I had my carry pistol and Macbook in there. I even double checked to make sure the door was closed and locked before I went inside.

My question: how the hell did this happen? I looked for markings in between the door where they might have pried it open to stick one of those metal sticks to hook onto the door latch, but there weren't any. I have an '07 Regular (Standard) Cab and don't have electric door locks or windows. I am seriously creeped out at the moment.

Don't have a sliding glass window either. My old 1994 Toyota pickup had one and we were able to break into it with a credit card so I made sure not to get one of those again when I purchased my 07.

I hope you've made out a Police report. I think they can get in at the top of the door at the window glass (above the key lock) with a shimmy thingamabobber.

I probably should have called the cops, but I didn't think they would do anything because nothing was stolen (that I know of). There weren't any video cameras in the parking lot and no one else was there to be a witness. I had 10 minutes to get back to work, so I took a picture of their plates and left.

Nylon wedges and a slim jim. Time to put an alarm in that has a 2 way remote. Oddball question, do you keep your owners manual with key ID number in the glove box? Also, be sure that you check your home windows and locks since some people get into cars to get home addresses off of insurance cards and such.
Still, go to the local PD and file a report.

Should have called the cops while they were sitting there and got a police report.

Sorry, that sucks man! People are pieces of shit. At least there was no damage/stuff missing. My last car got a few windows shot out parked on the street by kids with a bb gun. Nothing was taken, just driving by destroying things.

That's a little too sketchy right there...

I'd keep an eye out for that truck passing by your home. Could've been one of those cases where they broke into your truck, found your address on some document and are waiting for a bigger score than a pistol and a laptop.

I'd give the local PD a call and either file a report or at the very least ask to have an officer do a couple drive by's over the next day or two. I know our local guys do that if you ask.

Had someone bust out my window last summer and take my stuff so I understand the feelings that come with this sort of thing, I'm sorry man.

First thing I would do is file a police report and give them the plate number. If there has been a rash of vehicle burglaries in the area you could very well be holding the missing link. If they've been at it long enough could even qualify for a crimestoppers reward amd use it for mods/console vault.

This is why I don't trust anyone around my trucks. Im extremely picky on where I park and how I park and I loves store with large glass fronts, I will walk in the store and "hide" and just look back at my truck for a few mins if I'm in a weird area.

Wow. I also get a little creeped-out every time I have to go to the Academy in Macon, Ga as well. Not in the worst area of town, but not in the greatest area either and I always here stories of break-ins and attempts over there. I suppose it's a store they like to target for guns and such.

That seems odd that they would keep sitting there even after spotting you returning to the truck.

You are probably 100% correct. They probably target a place like Academy because they know those customers will have pistols. And I completely agree- I keep going through what happened in my head trying to figure out why they just stayed there. They already looked super guilty, it's not like them driving away would've added to the suspicious nature of it all. I guess they knew they didn't steal anything and there wasn't any way to prove they did anything?

I really wish I saw it happen so I know for sure they didn't take anything.

It won't make it 100% break in proof but window vent shades can help, makes it harder to pry open a space up top.

I wonder if these pricks would have smiled if they knew you were carrying. ;)

They'll get theirs sooner or later.

But yeah, file a police report in case they are linked in other or future cases.

I will contact the PD as soon as I can. I'm stupid for not doing it then.

Sorry to hear that happened man, people can really suck.

As far as no marks I know a few months back I saw on tv a show about car break ins. They said a new thing is to take blood pressure pumps wedge it in the crack of the door and then pump it up. It opens the door a jar and then they can either pop the lock with a shimmy or press the on lock button. They showed it on the show and it took them all of a minute or two max.

True. Never considered an alarm until today. I do keep my owners manual in there, but I don't have keyless entry so would my truck still have a key Id number? I'll have to check after work.

Also, how would they have time to use nylon wedges and a slim Jim? That seems like it would take at least 10 minutes just to get all that set up. That truck wasn't there when I parked, so they had probably less than 7 minutes or so to get in.

However they did it, they were extremely ballsy to do it in broad daylight, in an open parking lot, and when they didn't know how long I would be inside the store.
