No magic to it.. if you just want to unlock the door any key can be cut to function the lock. If you want a key to drive, you need to buy a key with the correct guts inside.

O.P. - Didn't you get a spare key that works the ignition from your dealer?

If you want a second spare to work in the ignition then yeah, your going to have to pay for one with a chip in it. It isn't unique to Toyota, almost every new vehicle is like that these days.

Send a PM to neneago on this forum and see if he can help you figure out what key you need, he can show you from there. It won't be as easy and hassle free as going to the dealer and it might not be all that much cheaper either.

Or, spend $100 on a key you want. You just spent 28k on a truck and a $100 key is too much? Come on.

assuming here that you want the key in the event that you lock your real keys in the truck ... AAA offers this credit card key if you are a club member

i had one for years with my old truck, never had an issue with it ... they tell you that it's easily strong enough to unlock the truck, but never stick it in the ignition ...

    saved me many times!!

I had the same plastic key for 12 years it never had any damage to it when I sold the truck and passed it to the next guy. I wouldn't rely on one by any stretch, but handy to have in the wallet to open a door if need be.

I own 1/2 and manage an Ace Hardware. TR47, at least in ilco blanks is the service key for all years as far as my book says. Under $3 at any hardware stores if you just want to open the door. 2005-2010 use a different program than 2011-2015 transponder. $60 for a programed chipped key. My programmer is 4 years old and won't do 2010+ Tacoma so I'm not sure where besides the dealer or buying on line and trying to program yourself. Getting it cut is hit or miss. I know many dealers won't cut blanks bought from other sources for many reasons but we usually will with a warning we won't be held responsible if it doesn't work.

V6 trucks use a chipped key for the ignition (door of course works without chip)
4 cyl. trucks do not use chipped key
