I recently bought a brand new 2010 4 door Tacoma. I only have 500 miles on it and am starting to wonder if something is wrong with it. I hope its because i'm just not use to a truck and this behavior is normal.

    The problem:
I turn the car on and let off the brake so that the truck begins moving, then I press on the accelerator...When I begin accelerating the truck feels like it is very heavy although I am not pulling anything. At the same time it makes a lot of winding noise although RPM's remain low sub 2,000 or thereabout... Then once it gets gets up a few MPH it jumps (I assume this is when it switches into second gear) then everything is fine from speeds around 20 mph and above.. i can let off the accelerator.. press it everything fine..

BUT when I slow down in traffic to around 10 or so and then press the accelerator to speed back up it does it again.. truck feels very heavy like its stuck in quicksand... starts winding up.. then jumps and is fine..

*NOTE* It does NOT do this every time i accelerate in 1st gear. in fact the majority of the time it does not.. but occasionally it does do this. ESPECIALLY if I am just lightly touching the accelerator.. if i apply a good bit of pressure it NORMALLY will not do this, although it sometimes still does. If I lightly apply the accelerator it does this near every time.

Also, it does this from a cold start and continues to do it even after driving for an hour. So, its not dependent on length of the drive..

Since my truck only has 500 miles on it, i been driving it very easy, hence the reason I am light on the accelerator fairly often and keep noticing this.

Does anyone else have this problem? I am tempted to go to a Toyota dealership and test drive one there to see if i can duplicate the problem on another vehicle. Thoughts? Should I be worried something is wrong with the transmission?

    Thanks

its just transmission lag, some people get it some people dont, i dont get the transmission lag. This is just the characteristics of a Tacoma. Nothing wrong with it at all, you will enjoy your Taco a whole lot more when you get used to driving it.

Same here ... it has created some stick-shift envy for me. :D

Truthfully though ... it's not too bad once you get used to it. :(

The owners manual warns not to shift to N while moving, not good for the transmission. Puts alot of stress on it when you go back into gear.

It's because you didn't get the floor mat zip tie TSB. Get that and everything will be perfect.

Probably referring to the throw out bearing problems some folks have had.

Uhmm, normal ehh? I don't know but it doesn't seem normal to me- I get shuddering when I slow down to 40 or below from driving highway speed and so on at low speed everytime I decelerate and bad enough to feel it in the seats, worst on downhill and roughness, vibration when I re accelerate- nope not normal for a 30K vehicle. I rode around with a load for a week to see if it would improve but the vibration just changed but it is still there- not my wheels I think it's something in the drive shaft just from how it feels. What worst is I like the truck but it'd be great to get rid of these problems. Any idea what this vibration/ shudder is about?
