How long do you plan to keep the truck? How much $$ do you want to sink into trying to protect the frame? And how long will this 'protection' (whatever you plan to use) will last before you have to sink another pile of money into it?? Then...what about the rest of the truck? Body....bed....axles...parts....brake lines....gas tank...etc.

If you're keeping the truck forever..... (literally), you'll be doing a full blown restoration eventually. With a full blown restoration....buy yourself a new frame and to hell with trying to save the old one. LOL

I would like to keep the truck as long as I can because I would prefer not to buy a truck out of school until I pay off my school debt. I mean by the time the frame craps out, I will have the means to buy a new truck.

To be honest, I would prefer to not sink a stupid amount of money, because for 1 my frame isn't bad and for 2 I am a college student. I am going to just going to clean it up and use encapsulator and top coat. I will either do eastwood or rustoleum. Plus after looking at the trucks frame again its not bad at all, so POR-15 is out.

I've tried POR, Rustoleum, Tractor Supply and... My 04 has 300,000+ miles on with very minimal rust. In fact, my worst spots are where the sliders are welded to the frame. The best paint I've found and use. Is the ACE Hardware Rust Stop Paint. Sold in pints, quarts and gallons in a few colors. My sliders were originally powder coated at a cost of $250. That lasted about 12 months, between Paragon, Rausch, George Washington, and other trips. The POR flaked off or blew off first time pressure washed. Tractor supply, ehhh. If you really want tractor paint, go to the manufacturer. Your not gonna get Porsche paint at Pep Boys. After, power washing, scrubbing with a brush, paint and let dry for a week or two. I then take mop n glo floor wax. Mix it 50/50 in a spray bottle with water. Spray everything frame, engine, fender wells etc. Everything except the PAINT.. (floor wax is a beeatch to get off paint). It will spray on milky white, once it dries. A clean, shiney coat is whats left. And, it holds up extremely well against the elements. I only wax the frame usually in July just before Truck Nationals.. So, my two cents, hope it helps someone. Oh, and if your decide to wax your engine compartment. Yes, I do.. Try to minimize the mop n glo on the belts and pulleys. The belts will slip. I usually after spraying it down and letting it dry. Will take a shop rag sprayed with brake kleen and wipe the belts and pulleys off. Just n case. Leaves the engine looking like new without letting every speck of dust and crap stick to it. Oh, yeah. I also use it on my 12 year old lawn mower: http://i464.photobucket.com/albums/rr7/glassdoc/IMG_20131030_161557_622.jpg

If you look at my profile photos you will see the frame photos after POR-15 application, the prep work is key if you want it to last, A LOT of time consuming work, When I had the diesel engine swap I had Dieseltyz handle the complete frame prep and coat, my frame has been good for roughly 2 years no pealing at all, I also had the inside of the frame coated with Easton frame coat, the spray cans have a tube and ball end that evenly sprays inside the frame to coat it, just slip hose into any openings in the frame, gun the spray and slowly drag hose back out- this is typical "corrosion protection" the auto body shops use after welding on frames etc.

    Hello all

Wanted to say hello, proud owner of 01 taco in the Philadelphia area. Sadly at under 170,000 this taco needs a Trans overhaul. Not something I'm up for doing. A well recommend Trans shop told me 3500 for the rebuild with a 2 year/25,000mile warranty. I thought it be around 2 grand. Can anybody tell me whats a fair price from experience? Also looking for good trans shop in the tri state to do the job. this forum has been an awesome resource for me and I thank its members for there input!

IPT in N.Jersey (Import Performance Transmissions) Recommended via Gadget from URD (Under Dog Racing) Toyota Performance guru. Give those guys a call, I'd bet they have one sitting on a shelf. And I may know of one in Central Virginia if it hasn't sold yet.

Had a great time, saw Gadget's new shop/warehouse. URD has stepped up. I never saw so many Doug Thorley Headers in one place.. And, Gadget put out the word I was coming. LOL Kept me busy from 10:30 til 2:40. Met some good peeps, one of which is semi-transplanted in the Annapolis area. Name is Trevor, has a BITCHIN 2013 Four Runner, done up real nice. He is looking for some folks to maybe go wheeling, trail riding etc with. Told him to hit you guys and the Maryland crew up. So, lets see. I repaired apprx 23-26 inches of windshield cracks and 7 stone shots. Then Gadget treated us to Stoneys Seafood for lunch.. Good times.. Gonna do this again sometime.
