Help! Getting bottom of shock to line up with bracket on lca

Yes, my dad is pushing it all the way down with a large pry bar. We still can't get it lined up

 

It won't disconnect without removing the sway bar, correct? We've used a impact gun and it won't budge.

 

That's my experience. Do you have an angle grinder? If that swaybar link's bolts are fubar, try to cut the lower link bolt off with the angle grinder. Or failing that, just cut the link in half and replace it later if you want to. You can remove the whole sway bar later to work on R&Ring the link hardware.

You can get new one for $20-30.

If the one on the other side is less f'd up, you can disconnect that one and it should help.

 

Yeah, I have an grinder but I'm pretty gunshy about cutting it out. I've been working on this for hours so in going eat some lunch and then see if I can get it loose.

 

You wont' hurt anything, seriously. My sway bar is hanging in my garage rafters after I installed my OME suspension, and like I said, you can get those parts pretty cheap and easy.

Good idea to take a break. There is another trick us use an upside-down hydraulic bottle jack inside the wheel well (at a strong area) and pushing down on the upper control arm at the top nut of the spindle. I am looking for pics now.

 

Right on. Would I have to buy the end links online or is it something I could get at a chain parts store?

 

Just take the sway bar off, hang it on the wall like a trophy. If you really want it back on I'm sure you could ask for another member's sway bar .. they are laying around everywhere

Yeah, I've read a lot of people taking the bar off but I was hoping if I decided to cut the links in half I could put them back today if I wanted to.

Edit: just be careful as you push down with the bottle jack that it doesn't force the coil spring into the end of upper control arm. Keep an eye on that.

 

Well I'm about to go at it again. I'm going to try the bottle Jack trick first, then see if I can loosen the sway bar nut

 

Okay so this is it as far as it goes. Just barely not enough! Going to try on the nut now

 

One last thought. Do you have the entire front end of the truck in the air, i.e., the passenger wheel is not on the ground, correct? That would fight against you on the driver side.

 

Yeah. I'm actually working on the passenger side, but the truck is in the air with both wheels off

 

A small victory has come my way!!!!!

 

Now that I have the sway bar disconnected, how do I go about getting the lca loose from the joint?

Got a small scissor jack in any of your vehicles?



Insert it between the bumpstop on your LCA and the bump pad on the frame. Carefully crank it to force the LCA down some more.

 

I don't have a scissor Jack unfortunately. Kinda scared to start disconnecting this stuff.

You should NOT need to, I don't think. Use the bottle jack again to push down on UCA again.
