BFG All Terrains for a 3" lift TRD Sport

I apologize in advance, I know this has been talked about, but I'm a little tire-stupid so I'm looking for some help.

Picking up a 2006 TRD sport tacoma next week. Has about a 3" lift on it (due to 4th leaf in the back, new spring and levelling in the front). The guy has a set of really ugly (imo) 18" rims on there with some fat tires that rub if you crank the wheel. So I'm thinking of just going back to the stock rims (can pick those up online) and putting all terrains on that aren't as wide. But I dont know what size of tire fits the 17" stock rims, and how big I can/should go on stock rims with the 3" lift.

 

Not 17's buuuut I'm running 285/75r16 on stock sport wheels with a 1.25" wheel spacer with a 3" lift and have zero rubbing.

 

285/70r17. You may have some rubbing on your frame or on some plastic in wheel well unless you space em like mentioned above.

 

do you guys recommend that I go with a wider/bigger wheel and add spacers? versus something smaller with no spacer. I found a set of LT285/70/r17 all terrains for sale so thats an option

 

I'm in the same boat. After I add UCA's I think I'm going to go with different wheels and 275/70/17's so no cutting is required.

 

285/70/17 is probably the largest you'll be able to run with a 3" lift. You also have to understand that the diameter of a tire varies depending on manufacturer and tire style. The BFG All-Terrain and the Goodyear DuraTrac tires are both very popular. Go to their respective websites and compare the diameter of the 285/70/17 and you'll find the DuraTrac is slightly taller.

I'm currently running about a 3" lift with 285/75/16 DuraTracs and I had rubbing which required trimming the fenders and doing a cab mount chop. 285/70/17 and 285/75/16 are essentially the same size tire for different size wheels. This is common for this size tire. You may not know the extent of trimming required until you take it off-road. Trimmed mine and had no issues around town. Got off the pavement and found they rubbed at certain angles.

You'll also need to take into account the wheel offset, backspacing, and width. Make sure the tire you choose is designed for your wheel width. Personally, I wouldn't go wider than a 11.5" tire. Mine are 11.3" and I wouldn't want them sticking out any farther. Since there are so many wheel/tire combinations possible, it's unlikely anyone will guarantee you won't have rubbing unless you match their setup exactly. Toytec told me they've had best results with an 8" wheel and 4.5" backspacing for this size tire. Their suggestion still required I trim.

While plenty of people run wheel spacers, I'm not a fan. I feel like they're an afterthought to address wheels that don't fit right. Even so, you'll find plenty of people who have no problems running them.

I'm very happy with my König Countersteer Type X wheels. Dustin at FNWheels.com has some sharp wheels and is great to work with. You might check them out if you're not set on the stock wheels.

To risk being a dick, many people call wheels "rims" but it's technically incorrect. A rim is a part of a wheel. If you start discussing technical elements of a wheel, you'll want to refer to them as wheels instead of rims to reduce confusion. However, since a lot of people interchange the words, it's usually not a problem. It's just jerks like me who point it out.

 

Also, no wheel spacers.

 

Ya, it also has new UCA's on the front he added with the new wheels/tires. That size seems to be the common choice.

I really like the countersteers, but I'm up in Canada and don't know of anywhere here that carries them. (not super excited about throwing down a ton extra for shipping and duty)


Again - my ignorance: can someone explain to me how to know that your tires will fit the rims. The stock TRD sports are 17x7.5" (i think?) If I buy new wheels in a different width size, how do I ensure i get tires that will fit.

 

Shoot Dustin an email and see what he can do. It can't hurt... I mean, unless you get really emotional about shipping/duty. If he can't cut you a reasonable deal, maybe he can help you find a Canadian vendor.

If you know the width of your wheel, go to the manufacturer's website of the tire you want. Most of them list what width wheel their tires fit. BFG's website shows the AT T/A KO2 fits 7.5" to 9" for 285/70/17.

So did some research and shopping - found this combo, which would definitely look awesome


I was looking to buy form 1010 tire (free shipping and mounting of the tires), and emailed them asking about the fit. They emailed back saying that they're concerned about 1) the taller tire and 2) the neutral offset of the Mojaves.

The taller tire i think will be fine with a 3" lift. anyone have any experience with putting neutral offset rims on though?

 

Most vendors are going to express concern for any setup that isn't stock because they don't want to assume responsibility. I'm running 0mm offset with 4.5" backspacing just fine. Many people run 33" tires with a 3" lift. 275/70/17 comes to about 32" which I would expect to be fine. Having said that, I can't speak specifically for that setup since it's not what I run. Assume no responsibility, right?

I have a 96 tacoma with a 6" lift in the front and 3" lift in the rear.
I need new tires soon and want to put 32" under my truck, I was
talking with a taco owner and he said that I would need a wheel
spacer, is this necessary and if so how big should I go will 1.5"
spacer do the trick?

Any help would be great

Went with the Black Rock Yuma's instead. Same look, but cheaper. Gonna try to squeeze the 16" on ... seen a couple of trucks with it ... despite the fact that the Black Rock website says that you need 17"

Ended up with the 17" Black Rock Yuma's and some 275/70/17 Cooper AT3. I think it looks great. no rubbing at all. The tires look bigger than I expected/bigger than the pictures (imo)
