The axle code for your rig can be found on the manufacture's sticker located on the driver's side door jamb as follows:
    First digit:

    • A = 7.5" ring gear
    • B = 8" ring gear
    Next two digits:

    • 01 = 3:42
    • 02 = 3:58
    • 03 = 4:10
    • 04 = 4:56
    • 05 = 3:15
    • 06 = 3:91
    • 07 = 4.30
    Last digit:

    • A = 2 Pinion, Open
    • B = 4 Pinion, Open
    • C = 2 Pinion OEM Limited Slip
some '98-00 models have shown a BO code of "???" on the door plate; so far this turns out to be a 3.91 gear ratio, at least for the 5sp. RZN171L-CRPDKAB with factory 31s/265s should be 4.56 with the AT.
Edit by Ed Quinones on 10-7-05: I used to own a 99 Prerunner ext cab 2.7L with auto tranny and gear code of B07A. It came from the factory with a 4.56 gear ratio.

My 2002 2.7L taco xcab was packed with 4:20 gear ratio from the factory but i swapped mine with 5:29. Sweet mall crawl. Good info.

I noticed that this was posted on the 1st gen tacomas wall.

Would this also apply to second gens?

What about 4runners, FJ cruisers and what not?

Looking to start a 4runner build soon.

Because an engineer determined a 4.56 gear ratio would work better with a 2.7 automatic and that 4.10 would be better suited to a V6 automatic?

The amount of pinions in the planetary set. one has 2, the other has 4. Most all rear diffs us a 2 pinion set up.

Where is the planetary set located within the differential? I know there is a planetary gear set in the transfer case but am not aware of one in the diffs. Are you referring to the number of spider gears?

If I wanted to put 4:10's in my truck would anything have to be done to the speedometer (show correct speed)? I assume not, but I wasn't sure. I hate these 3.58's truck just feels gutless.

You will have to change the speedometer drive gear in the transfer case if you change your differential ratios and keep the same tire size.

The chart seems to correlate with the code on my door jamb label. Mine reads A/TM: A04C / A750F. If I use the part in bold, it reads 7.5" diff., with 4.56 gears and Limited Slip. I looked elsewhere on the internet and couldn't find anything different, or specific to 2nd Gen trucks.
