Went to the gas station this morning to pick up a few things. When I walked in I heard the guy at the counter buying some $50 lottery tickets (scratchers)... I thought to myself as I was walking around the store....WHAT A CRAZY focker, spending money on those stupid scratchers!

He left the store, I finished grabbing the things that I needed, walk up the the counter to pay, she rings everything up, I look down and see a wallet that looks JUST like mine with wads of cash sticking out of it! The scratcher guy left his wallet sitting on the counter, with who knows how much money in it.

I told the casher lady,.......OH, that guy must have left his wallet, and its got a lotta cash in it! She seemed shocked that I was turning it in with cash sticking out........ Anyway, I think that she may have pocketed it herself ( the cash anyway )

    What would you do?

Do the right thing. I would have looked for a license with his address and probably mailed it to him.

Leave it there and let the cashier deal with it.

If you take it and the guy realizes two minutes down the road that his right ass cheek feel different and turns around when he figures out his wallet is missing and you've grabbed it up to mail back to him. He is stuck without his shit for days waiting on you and the snail mail to get it back to him.

I would have looked for any contact info and called them or even handed it over to the cops. That clerk pocketed the cash and said someone turned it into her empty.

Would have taken the wallet and returned it to the rightful owner.
Two weeks back I was walking around the neighborhood with my 10 year old and he spotted a small wallet on the side of the road. We picked it up and headed home, once home, drove to the address on the license & returned it to the owner who then gave my son $35 in cash (all he had) as a reward for returning it & doing the right thing.

If I got stuck without my wallet for even a day- I would not be able to get on base, get into my BOQ room, get cash, and if I realized that I had left it somewhere (which I never have) and went back to get it and some random person had taken it- I'd be pissed.

It's the same idea as Search and Rescue. If you are the lost person-You stay put where you are and let them find you. If you try to walk around and find your rescuers...you'll make it that much harder.

Copy any contact information, count the cash, write down the clerks name and talk with another clerk or manager, go home and find the owner. Karma.

You didn't do the wrong thing. Those counters are under surveillance. You're now on tape, doing the right thing, leaving the wallet there for the guy to come back and claim it. Do you want to be on tape taking the wallet and walking away with it? If he comes back and there's cash missing, he can call the cops and they can see exactly what happened and figure out who took the cash.

Even if you took the wallet to mail it to him, they pull the tapes, you possibly still get busted for theft. I would have left it there with the clerk...pass the risk...

Over the years, I have returned many wallets - One had no id, so I posted a little sign next to where I found it. The note said to call me. The wallet had about 60 dollars in it and from the cards in it, I would say that the guys was a recovering addict of some sort. I recieved about 15 calls and they would all ask stupid questions? Like what color was the wallet. I would just ask one. "What baseball card was in the wallet?" Everyone tried to guess - there wasn't any baseball card in it! After 2 weeks, I donated the money to a church that does rehab outreach.

Another time, I was camping in Havasupai for 4-5 days and found one on the way out. I verified the address on the wallet to his name and sent it to the guy. He sent me a thank you and it turned out to be a guy that was the talk of the campgrounds that wore nothing other than a small speedo. Next time I will wait to find a purse!!! (and no that's not the guy - I just thought it illustrated the point!)
